Editor's Note

Four years after the tragic death of their children in a car accident, Dr. Chris Nielsen (Robin Williams) is estranged from his wife, Annie (Annabella Sciora), a painter who finds solace in deep and mystical expressionist landscapes. When flustered Annie calls him for support, he rushes out to help and is killed in a road accident. His ghost is greeted by an old mentor, Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.), who leads him in Ghost-of-Christmas-Past-style to Annie's side. But when Chris realizes that his adherence to the corporeal world is torture to himself and the living Annie, he breaks free of his Earthly bonds and dives into the visual smorgasbord that is the afterlife. There he splashes though clouds and gobs of technicolor paint in breathtaking landscapes suggested to him by Annie's paintings. From there, to grandiose Romanesque cities of flying children, Chris and his old dog are met by a gorgeous stewardess, who reveals herself as a nearly forgotten face from his past. As Chris reconciles with his children in a world where imagination is his palette, in the real world Annie becomes sicker and sicker, and finally enters the afterlife herself. Due to the myriad rules of the Other Side, she is unable to join Chris or her children, and Chris begins a fight for his future with his soul mate.

Working from a screenplay by Ron Bass, [Director Vincent] Ward has created a film that at its most visually evocative portrays its characters' lives and afterlives as a kind of hall of mirrors, in which the lines between dream and reality, memory and eternity are continually blurring as one gives way to another. At its most seductive, the film portrays heaven as a magical, hallucinatory extension of the physical world that has been left behind... - Stephen Holden

5 of 5 Absolutely Marvelous, Wonderful, and Sometimes Sad Friday, December 03, 2004
Lee from Mesa, AZ

This is an absolutely wonderful movie. The story makes you believe you’re going to watch a fairy-tail romance, yet leads you into the pains of life’s “bad luck”. And even though it does end with a happy ending, the tears you cry throughout will be of the pain felt between two soulmates, who have lost their children, and almost lost their love for each other because of that pain and the pain of their unplanned separation. Yet in the end, the tears of joy of that happy ending will leave you hoping that when your time arrives to leave this earth, that you find it just as beautiful in Heaven as they did. Robin Williams is famous for being a comedic actor, yet his portrayal of a doctor in love left very little room for comedy, but lots of room for great dramatic acting (with some Williams comedy worked in where possible). Annabella Sciorra as the beautiful “Annie” is a wonderful complement to Williams’ character. The pain she portrays is almost sometimes painful to watch. Only a few out there know of that exact pain and suffering that Williams and Sciorra’s characters experienced in this movie. It’s not easy to watch a family go through that kind of heartache. “What Dreams May Come” is filled with vivid and colorful imagery done by some very masterful artists and computer graphics specialists, which will just take your breath away. The computer graphics used to make Williams’ character “Chris” first afterlife world is phenomenal. Only real paint would have been messier. With the supporting efforts from Cuba Gooding, Jr., Max Von Sydow and Rosalind Chao we are taken on a journey that shows us what our afterlife might be like. Just don’t forget your box of Kleenex when you watch it. You may need it.
