These work, but with limitations. They communicate using FM signals over your household wiring. Great in theory, but there are two very big drawbacks:
1) Range limitation. I don't have that large a place (two story townhouse), but these intercoms can't communicate from the second story to the Westinghouse doorbell module (Westinghouse part # WHDB-300), installed on the first floor (and vice-versa). This is probably a limitation of the doorbell module, as the intercoms themselves can work between the 1st and 2nd floor, and the intercoms can talk to the doorbell module from the 1st floor.
2) X-10 limitation. Something I did not know before buying these is that these share the same limitations as all X-10 devices. Most households have their wiring split into two "sides" (240 volts come into a house, and are split into two 120 volt circuits). Well - these intercoms, like all X-10 devices, won't work across the two circuits. This means you will only be able to talk to other intercoms that are on the same circuit (essentially half your house). Smarthome makes a plug-in coupler called Signalinc which should fix this, in theory, but didn't for me. I think this is because of the range limitation of the intercoms mentioned above - the signal had to travel from an outlet - to the circuit breaker - to where I had the Signalinc plugged in - back to the circuit breaker - then back out to the outlet that the other intercom was plugged into.
Altogether, I wish I hadn't bought these. If I could do it over again, I would have spent the extra money and bought some Reporter intercoms:
