I plugged it in, formatted it, and it worked flawlessly. The 5400 RPM was preferable for me for lower power consumption. My only complaint, and it may not be the drive but the drive adapter, is I'm using it as a second drive in place of the DVD drive and I cannot stop the drive to eject it and swap on the fly but rather have to restart the computer. It's a great deal to get 500 Gb for that price ($113 & free shipping) on a 2.5 sata drive. This was for a friend and we moved his 260 gb drive to this one and then replaced it on the laptop. If it was for me I would have liked a 7200 rpm drive even if it was pricier. Specially with Vista installed but all in all it's a great deal and I don't buy any other brand that WD on drives.
