Product Guides

Designed with top-of-the-line notebook computers in mind, this high performance drive delivers the capacity and speed needed to supercharge a notebook PC without compromising battery life or quiet acoustics. Features like these also make this drive an outstanding option for compact desktops, external hard drives, gaming systems, and blade servers.

Desktop-class performance for notebook computers - With 7200 RPM spin speed, 16 MB cache, and capacities up to 320 GB, these drives enable you to have the best of both worlds: the capacity and performance of a desktop PC with the convenience and portability of a notebook.

Massive capacity - WD's 320 GB 2.5-inch drives offer huge capacity for space-hungry operating systems like Windows Vista®, with plenty of room left over for photos, music, and video.

Low power consumption - With technologies like IntelliSeek™, which calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption [View demo] and SecurePark™, which reduces power by parking the heads during low power idle mode, this drive delivers 5400 RPM-equivalent power consumption in a 7200 RPM drive.

Quiet - In a notebook drive, silence is golden. WD's exclusive WhisperDrive™ combines state-of-the-art seeking algorithms to yield one of the quietest 2.5-inch hard drives on the market.

Free-fall sensor - As an added layer of protection, if the drive (or the system it's in) is dropped while in use, WD's free-fall sensor detects that the drive is falling and, in less than 200 milliseconds, parks the head to help prevent damage and data loss.

Tested for compatibility - We perform tests on hundreds of systems and a multitude of platforms in our FIT Lab™ and Mobile Compatibility Lab to give WD customers confidence that our drives will work in their systems.

5 of 5 Excellent for Win 7 Saturday, March 28, 2009
RobL from Vermont

Put this in an XPS M1330 Dell with beta Win 7. This appears to be a winning combination, as the speed of every task is light-years ahead of the Vista OEM system. I'm not sure which is more responsible for the improvement, the drive or the beta, but the drive certainly runs quietly, appears cooler than the original and has shown perfect performance so far.

Well let me say that over the last 28 years that I have been working with personal computers this drive is by far and away the BEST buy that I've ever made. It performs perfectly. The Prompt Service that I received with Buy.Com will certainly bring me back for more in the Near Future! Sincerely,

5 of 5 Quiet smooth and fast Tuesday, January 27, 2009
Nicholas from Mentor Ohio
I purchased this drive to add to my Dell Studio 17 laptop. It took about 15 minutes from start to finish to add the drive. I made this drive my primary drive because of its speed. The Western Digital drive is very quiet, I cannot hear any clicks, or feel any vibration. I'm very amazed at how technology has advanced since back in the early days of the 1990's when I first got into the world of computers. I really cant find any cons about the Western Digital drive, I ran a diagnostic test on it after installing and it passed with a perfect score. Installation was easy, all the holes lined up as they should and I am very pleased with the performance of this drive. Windows Vista now boots up much faster, and my programs seem to load faster too. The other drive in my laptop is a Toshiba, 250 gb, at 5400 rpm, and actually its amazingly quiet, and cool also, I just wanted to have more space, and a faster drive and the Western Digital was at a good price, it works very well, and I have no complaints about it at all. If youre thinking of adding a second drive, or replacing an older one, this drive is a good choice. It runs cool, I dont notice any heat other than the normal warm feeling in the area of the drives, and I also do not see any loss of battery life when Im running on the battery. Everything appears to run cool, quiet, and very smooth.

5 of 5 Quick and Big notebook drive Saturday, January 24, 2009
JasJ from Houston TX
Upgraded from a 160gb 7200rpm drive on my HP notebook. It is a little quicker than the old drive and doubles my space. No discernable impact on battery life. Overall very happy.

5 of 5 Works great Monday, January 05, 2009
A Customer from Richmond, VA
I bought this drive for Macbook. It worked great. I cloned everything stored in 80GB existing hard drive into this new hard drive. I wish my IBM notebook cloning process is this simple.

5 of 5 Great Drive! Tuesday, December 23, 2008
Kyle from Johnson, Kansas
This hard drive is amazing! I have a 13" Macbook with a 2.2 GHz Processor and 4 GB of Ram ( also non-stock). With my 120 I had really decent performance and was unaware that such a simple thing as swapping hard drives would increase performance so much. At about 2 Gb of free space left I caved in and bought this drive, due to the fact that everything was slower than....well really slow. I cloned my old drive and have partitioned 40 GBs for Vista and the 260ish to Leopard, and the performance is great. Noticeable improvements include: Noise Level - ZERO! I haven't heard anything. I used to hear random strange noises from my computer and what I thought were just random parts, was actually my hard drive. The only downside of the Noise level , I hear how unfortunately loud I type. Boot Up Time- I can't say an exact number but by my judgement there is at least a twice as fast boot up time. Temperature- It is much more efficient at keeping a steady "low" temperature. Before I used to use a cooling pad and be doing very little work and it would be at barely under 100 degrees. At the current moment its on my bed with no external fans and Im running multiple applications and its 80 degrees. Application Load-Time- I have the entire Adobe Creative Suite and its never loaded faster. Performance of the program is good not any better necessarily but as good as it gets and great load time.

5 of 5 Easy swap for a notebook Tuesday, December 23, 2008
A Customer from Ellicott City, MD
WD has a really good web site for warranty and installation. The software tools that come with the retail version are downloadable for this drive (the OEM version) although they do not support Vista. Additionally the 5 year warranty on the retail version also applies to this drive. WD has a warranty section where you type in the serial number and it will tell you the month your warranty expires, which is great! My 13 month old laptop was out of warranty and I was getting wiggy behavior I eventually traced to my HDD with HD Tune (unusually high HDD temps & hard errors causing freezes). I was a little nervous about cloning a Vista drive - had heard a lot about license key issues, but Acronis Easy Clone 7 did it with aplomb (boot, choose clone, walk away, when finished install new drive, boot like normal). Bottom line - the drive is very quiet, is running cooler than my faulty drive, and the same temp before it started failing. Haven't really had time to test the real world speed (just benchmarked it to see if the extra RPMs positively impacted the artificial tests better than the 5400 RPM drive I replaced, and they did). Battery life is not an issue for me, but I have not noticed any difference, although the slight bump in power requirements for 33% more RPM's might subtract a few minutes. All in all a painless experience. This is about the 10th thing I've bought from Buy.com - delivery was ahead of promise date, and the price was excellent. The price for a drive of this capability is a great value.

5 of 5 Not just good...Great! Monday, December 22, 2008
A Customer from Ames, Iowa
For less than a hundred bucks, I improved the overall eprformance of my ASUS G1S about 50%. Not bad. I'll likely not fil this up for a couple years, even though I have 100+ GB of mp3s to put on it over the next few weeks. Great drive! Worked right out of the box, installed and had running in a half-hour.

5 of 5 Good Value Friday, December 12, 2008
A Customer from New City, NY
The Drive worked well with no problems. The Drive replaced my original 160GB laptop drive. Once the drive was formatted, I cloned my original drive to the new one, removed the old drive, installed the new drive leaving plenty of storage.

5 of 5 gigabyte = a billion bytes ??? Friday, December 12, 2008
A Customer from nyc
320GB in their language apparently means 298 gigabytes. where do they get off redefining gigabyte? why not just call a GB 17 bytes, and say 18,380,920 GB? otherwise wonderful- quieter than my laptops fairly quiet fan, great performance, and does NOT overheat with moderate-high use. dont know about reliability yet.

Quiet. I can't hear it over the fan on my notebook. & Cool. no 'hot spot' on the underside of my rig. Windows Experience Index shows 5.7 for the Disk Data Transfer Rate.. On a HP Tx2000 with 2 gig ram & running vista ultimate.

5 of 5 PS3 Saturday, November 08, 2008
Brian from Richmond, VA
Swapped this hard drive out for the 80G in my PS3 and it works great! Haven't noticed much of a heat difference even though it has a higher rpm than the stock HD. Got this one because I had read where others had success with it in the same application - plus the great price and reliability of Buy.com!

5 of 5 60% performance boost Monday, November 03, 2008
v3xx from rancho cucamonga CA
i have a may 2007 macbook with 4 gigs of ram. the original seagate died suddenly losing everything. it only took 5 minutes to install the drive. after running benchmark tests.there is an overall performance boost of 60%. also my macbook goes from turned off to completely on and useable in 19 seconds. menus with long lists open instantly instead of loading for a few seconds. also the drive is extremely quiet and cool. it's actually quieter than my older slower drive. this drive also can adjust it's speed to what you need. if you're just using the internet the drive seems to almost stop but as soon as you download something it kicks into high gear. one thing that people dont seem to think about is "FORMATED STORAGE" the hard drive comes with 291 gigs available and i believe it was ntfs formatted, but it is easily formatted to hfs+. having worked with computers for years i have never seen such a high performance boost to cost ratio. if you're one of the many people considering a new computer to run vista, i highly recommend going with a 7200 rpm hard drive first. its 100 bucks and you can easily get another year out of your machine.

5 of 5 WOW, great quiet fast performance upgrade! Tuesday, October 21, 2008
Julius from Corona, CA
I put this drive into my 1st gen MacBook with 2gb RAM and VOILA, I have a very fast notebook again! The drive is silky quiet you can't hear it even spin and it doesn't get hot at all. I noticed big gains in boot up time and overall hardisk access. Didn't notice battery life going down either. You don't hear the HD spin up or down either which is nice. Overall, you would have thought it came from Apple this way. PERFECT! This drive upgrade has extended the life of my wife's Macbook for at least another 2-3 years. Now there is so much space she doesn't even know what to do with it.
