5 of 5 Excellent pocket drive... Wednesday, May 27, 2009
Mk from New York, NY

I use this passport drive as a decoding cache for live performance dj software, and some backing up of important files. This drive is constantly working (off of laptop usb power) during gigs, easily 30 hours per week for over one year now, and in my opinion that makes it reliable and worthy of your investment.

5 of 5 Affordable performance! Tuesday, April 08, 2008
A Customer from Cerritos, CA
Bought this compact drive as a gift and she loves it! Plug 'n' play and headache-free installation; One of the best features of this drive is its portability; it literally fits in your pocket! The capacity is more than enough for its intended use. Seek speed maybe a bit slow but I would recommend this to anyone none-the-less!

1 of 5 Failed after 14 months limited use Wednesday, March 26, 2008
JW from Milwaukee, WI
Very poor value for this purchase. HD's should last longer than this. The drive barley cleared the warranty and failed (one year, 2 mos). It was a waste of my money and certainly not worth replacing. very disappointed in this product. WD support was very courteous, but really didn’t care.

5 of 5 WD Passport way worth it Wednesday, February 20, 2008
paul_hardin from Provo, Utah
The Western Digital Passport portable drive is EXCELLENT! It's very light, draws power from the USB port on my wife's Acer laptop, and takes care of her space needs because of all the family photos she takes. It was super-easy to set up and worked immediately. I really like the thin formfactor: I velcroed it to the top of my wife's laptop, and the little cord is just the right length so she can open and close the laptop and take it anywhere without unplugging the Passport from the USB port or removing the drive from the laptop lid. It's an amazing little drive that really fits our needs.

Perfect size for laptops. Just got mine and it was simple to use. Did not use the pre-installed software. Elected to use Windows (vista) 'Drag n Drop' and everything is fine! I would say it is definitely worth the money!

5 of 5 Portable Backup Hard Drive Friday, January 25, 2008
Murphy from Astoria, OR
This drive is great for backups. Installed with ease. Everybody complaining about the short cable...so what. Well maybe they could sell you a spare so you could leave the one plugged in to the port that you can't see on your desktop and use the other one for your laptop. Much better than burning CDs or DVDs. Didn't try their software...just copying with explorer works fine for me. I am always wary of software that trys to do stuff for you...like the Roxio software that backed up my picture folder but didn't bother to include my movies that I lost...but that's another story.

5 of 5 Outstanding Product and value priced! Wednesday, January 23, 2008
Mike S. from Cincinnati, OH
I received the WD Passport Protable Harddrive faster than anticipated(but I have come to expect that from Buy.com). The HD is VERY easy to use. I plugged it into my MAC and it was ready to work. Back up and transfer of data was very simple. All I did was highlight the desired items and drag them over. When I plugged it into my DELL laptop, all the data was there ready for me to use. Yes the USB cable is short, but since I already had an extension, it was no problem. I would HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone who desires hassle free back up and storage of their important documents, music, photos, etc.

3 of 5 Good disk; lousy instructions Monday, December 31, 2007
Carl Reynolds from Rochester, NY
I finally have this disk doing what I wanted it to do, which is to allow me to copy large numbers of files from my primary computers and provide backup copies. Unfortunately, I have spent many hours getting to this point. The "instructions" that come with the drive consist of 3 pictures, and the pictures imply that you must run a program called WD Synch to access the disk functionality. When I ran WD Synch, the program finished about 24 hours later. When I could not figure out how to restore any of the files (the files are encrypted in the process, and even the names disappear), I went to the Western Digital web site and learned that WD Synch is specifically not for backup. If you lose a file, and resynch with the portable drive, the file will also be removed from the portable drive! OK. The short answer is that all you need to do for backup is to copy files in the usual way from the computer to the portable drive. To restore, just copy them back from the portable to the computer. Forget about WD Synch altogether. There must be people who care about WD Synch, but I doubt there are very many who do, and I sure don't. I consider the instructions packed with this disk to be wholly inadequate. It's too bad that an apparently good product has now left a bad taste in my mouth, simply because the factory couldn't finish the job with a page of helpful prose.

I was about to buy yet Another FlashDrive when my friend suggested to get a portable hard drive... Now with the money I was gonna spend buying a flashdrve, I have got 15 TIMES MORE GB's, plus its much faster than a Flash Drive and some computers that didn't read my flash drives easily, read my Western Digital Passport very nicely and FAST!!

1 of 5 NO Encryption, False Ad, No Customer Service Respo Monday, December 03, 2007
A Customer from San Mateo, CA
Order arrived in 3 days. I was excited, however, this doesn't provide Encrypt as said in Ad. Sync asks for password, but as no encryption. It says, Data can be accessed only with password, but no, thats not true. I called Western Digital Customer Service, but no response, 36 minutes, and still music. I looked for encrypt software, most needs to be paid or use gnupg.org or truecrypt.org types. I wouldn't recommend this hard drive. I have acom data, the only negative factor is, it would require power, but is highly Secured as it has password protection by default. Can't pass that without password. NOT SO IN WESTERN DIGITAL. I will return this, right away. I visited their site, and even that no where mentions password protection, and encryption. This isn't to be trusted security wise. Its like saving your data for someone to view at anytime. Its you being Naked without a strong password protection. Thanks.

2 of 5 Almost worth it Sunday, December 02, 2007
howard from closter, NJ
The Western Digital Passport external HD was supposed to be the back-up for my 2 Mac laptops using Time Machine. It worked perfectly with my older Mac laptop. However, with my newer Mac G-4 laptop, the drive would not work by simply plugging it into the USB receptacle. In fact, there was a FAQ on the WD site for this device explaining that for some Mac laptops the hard drive need an additional booster cable device for an additional cost of $10.00 plus freight- more than 20% additional cost. I believe that since there was no reference on the offering specs, in this regard, the cable should have been either included in the package or made available at no cost, upon the purchaser discovering that the Passport would not work with the Mac..

1 of 5 Very inconsistent product for Mac users Friday, November 30, 2007
A Customer from New York, NY
A year ago, I had bought this hard drive (Model WD1200U017-001) as a gift for a friend who uses a PC. I had considered buying one for myself, but as a Mac user, I was wary that it might not work for me. To my surprise, the hard drive I bought as a gift worked on my Powerbook G4 as well, so I bought another for my own use when the price dropped again. This time however, my Powerbook could not read this model (Model WD1200U017-005). Furthermore, I have used it with two Macbooks with the same specifications and only one out of the two was able to read the drive. It is a really inconsistent product. Something must've happened with the specs btwn 001 and 005. And Western Digital support have been unhelpful - only telling me that Macs do not have enough power to power the drive when in fact my powerbook was able to read model 001 and one Macbook was able to read model 005. Also my friend's desktop pc was not able to read 005. I'm highly disappointed as now I have to spend the equivalent of half of the price I paid for the drive so I can be shipped a power booster cable. But to let others know, the excuse WD uses that Mac can't power their drive is misleading. In fact, some indiv Mac computers can read their drive.

5 of 5 Good little drive Thursday, November 29, 2007
A Customer from New York, NY
I bought this drive to use for iMovies I'm working on. As I make more of them, I imagine I'll need larger capacity, but for now I need a portable little workhorse. This fits the bill quite well. I formatted it for my MacBook, partitioned it, and started recording straight to it from my mini DV through the MacBook, and it worked fine. I was a little worried that the USB would be too slow and I debated about getting a drive with FireWire ... but it proved to be unnecessary. I think, however, that I would want a FireWire drive for speed if I were using it to back up a whole hard drive. For my current needs, though, this is a great portable solution.

4 of 5 Requires reformatting to use with Microsoft Backup Wednesday, November 28, 2007
danwa61 from Portland, OR
Drive works fine and a great value. Only hiccup was in trying to use it with the basic backup program built into Windows XP. Making a large backup file (over 4GB) requires the drive to be formatted as NTFS, but WD pre-formats all drives as FAT32, which can't handle a single large file over 4GB. Just a heads up to anyone else trying to do this. Once you figure this out it's not hard to reformat, but WD could have made it a little easier to figure this out...

5 of 5 Easy as can be, great item! Wednesday, November 28, 2007
CF from Marietta, GA
This product was easy to use, truly "plug and play" and has been a huge help to me by storing files and allowing me to back-up a somewhat shaky laptop. The drive is small, easy to transport, and can store a ton of documents, photos, or music files. I'm considering buying another just for mass storage of personal digital photos (this one was for my professional computer) so I don't have to worry about a hard drive crash and I can show off the photos whenever I want on a trip.

5 of 5 Very Good Hard Drive Wednesday, November 28, 2007
A Customer from Brooklyn Park, MN
I bought this hard drive primarily because of the brand name and its portability. I've had several external WD hard drives and so far don't have any problem with any of them. This hard drive is great, easy to use, and very reliable, especially it's not hot even though I left it on for 3 days. It's perfect for carrying around with laptop but if you use it with a desktop, the USB cord is very short. I think WD should think about this issue. Highly recommended!

4 of 5 Buy the 160 GB drive... Wednesday, November 28, 2007
c-mac from Lincoln, NE
The usb cord is very short, but an extender fixed that. Cords with small-guage wire did not provide enough power, but my large-guage extender did the trick. I'm kicking myself for not waiting 2-3 weeks to buy because now the 160 GB version of this drive is $81 here at Buy.com: http://www.buy.com/prod/western-digital-passport-160gb-usb-2-0-portable-2-5-external-hard-drive/q/loc/101/203169718.html

4 of 5 Great drive - short cable Wednesday, November 28, 2007
A Customer from Stamford, CT
This drive works perfectly, reasonably fast and flawless. Small & light. Only issue is that the USB cable is very short (about 8 inches). If you use a longer cable it will not work, as apparently too much power is lost travelling the longer distance. So only good if you can keep the drive right next to the USB port to which it is plugged in.

5 of 5 Awesome Portable USB Drive Tuesday, November 27, 2007
A Customer from Bedford, TX
The WD Passport drive powers up easily from my USB port and quietly stores all of the data that I save to it. I have read many reviews about this drive before purchasing it and some were negative and some were positive. I would have to say that I am very positive and think very highly of Western Digital and this passport drive. If you are looking for a portable backup solution or a tool to gather files from other machines, I recommend this drive. I have had nothing but success using it.

5 of 5 ALL I COULD HAVE ASKED FOR Tuesday, November 13, 2007
Les from Lucinda,Pa.
As a "mature" novice to computers, I did a lot of research to find a portable hard drive that would be extremely easy to use,as well as reliable to store my vital information for my business. The Western Digital Passport seemed to best suit my purpose, and it has. It was very easy to backup my laptop and the short USB cable is preferred for my use. I also like the self powered, with no extra plug for AC. If it matters to anyone, my 120GB is shiny black "plastic",not painted metal,as I'd heard, and is totally silent when in use. It is also Vista compatible, which my computer is. Buy.com had the best price,$69.95 (with incentives), and the free shipping option was much quicker than I expected. I'd recommend WD and buy.com to anyone. Thank you.

5 of 5 Best thig since sliced bread Thursday, November 01, 2007
hughnile from Calcutta, OH
I bought one for my son. It died after 2 weeks (the old bathtub curve at work) but Western Digital replaced it without any problem and the person at WD was a pleasure to work with--unlike those that I have talked to at Seagate. I liked it so much that I bought one for myself. You just plug it in and that is all there is to it. It is small, fast, quiet, inexpensive, and good looking--now, if they just made women like that...

5 of 5 good size and portable cool looking HD Wednesday, October 31, 2007
Simon from New York, NY
Bought this for my girlfriend since she has to transfer some files from her work computer to her apple laptop. I was amazed by the relatively small size of drive and it looks chic in the midnight black coating with the blue indicator light once it's in working. I agree with other users, that the cable is a little short. With the portability built into this drive i think it would be perfect to use it with a laptop. The transfer of file is effortless and speedy. Did i mention it also work with Mac? In all, it's a great buy. I am thinking about snatching up one for myself as well...

5 of 5 Well worth it Wednesday, September 26, 2007
A Customer from Houston, Texas
This is a very good portable hard drive. I can recommend it highly. I bought it to replace a SimpleTech portable that was a total disaster. The SimpleTech would suddenly decide it did not want to be recognized by a computer that it had worked with before and no matter what I did, the malfunction remained permanent. My Western portable works great with all three of our computers. It’s well worth the price.

1 of 5 Don't use with a Mac Portable Tuesday, September 25, 2007
Jerry Pirrung from Huntingtown, MD
I bought one of these back in May and was able to use it successfully with a Dell Latitude D620, Apple G5 iMac, and Apple G4 iBook. Based on this success, I bought another for my wife, she of the G4 iBook. The newer unit does not work with the iBook. I called WD and found out that they made a change to the electronics, and the latest versions require more power. To work with the iBook, they need to send me a USB "Booster" cable. Now I will have to use both USB ports to power the drive, and won't have access to plug in another USB peripheral, i.e. flash card reader, to transfer to the drive directly. If you want to use this on a Mac portable, don't buy it. This problem is not only with the iBook.

1 of 5 Beauty's Only Skin Deep, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Tuesday, September 25, 2007
ellen1 from Akron, Ohio
Even though the Western Digital Passport Portable Hard Drive is great-looking, sleek and compact, it would help somewhat if it actually worked. I've purchased the larger version for home use and had no problem. This portable version (it will fit in your pocket) sounds like it wants to work, but NOTHING - nothing shows up as an additional hard drive, nothing can be saved to it, NOTHING. I have attempted to call the technical support line THREE TIMES and have waited TWENTY MINUTES each time, while hearing how WD is attending to other customers' needs. Is everyone complaining about this product??

4 of 5 Awesome product Tuesday, September 11, 2007
Jay from Sayreville, New Jersey
This is an awesome product. only small glitch on the form factor. the surface is glossy and easily reflects your hand and finger prints and the sides are also glossy, slippery and LED indicator side is slant and possible for slip out from hand. Shoule be very careful when lifting it from the surface or holding it in the sweaty hand. Jay

4 of 5 good product but short cable Monday, August 13, 2007
Premal from King of Prussia, PA
This product is really very good...but the only hitch is the short cable (less than 6 inches) that connects the hard drive to the computer...which means that the hard drive also stays hanging or lying down on the floor.

5 of 5 Great hard drive! Saturday, August 11, 2007
A Customer from Texas
This hard drive is relatively easy to use. When I hooked it up to my desktop, it didn't automatically run (which the instructions said it would) but the instructions were simple to follow to start it up. You just press sync and it copies your hard drive (you have to designate which parts of your hard drive you want copied). It took me a couple of tries to get it to copy all of the parts of my hard drive I wanted it to, but it wasn't hard to do. I'd recommend this hard drive if you're looking for something easy, portable, and secure.
