It does come with backup program on the drive. And that program works very well. It does not have bells and whistle, but it has all functions most people wants and needs. Be warned, it does not require external AC adapter, but if your laptop does not supply enough power to run this unit, you would need to buy external power supply unit. And this unit has port for that.
Luckily, I have regular size laptop, not ultra compact laptop, and it did not need an external AC adapter. Was this review helpful?

WD has designed a great product. The Passport is a little bit slower then other hard drives I have, but it uses only power from the USB port!
This product is great for travel, transfering large files at the job, or for the desktop if you don't want an external power cord.
Remember to always back up your valuable data off-site in your safety deposit box or in separate location. The question is not, will my hard drive/computer fail, but when. It might be 10 or 15 years, but there is always a chance that the computer/hard drive will fail. Don't get caught without a recent backup. Was this review helpful?

The price is right and thanks to Buy.com for the free shipping! It's a plug and play, no drivers needed and it sure make a very handy backup of data files. Would be nice if WD provide a backup software. I am very pleased with the performance of it, hasn't found any glitch. Was this review helpful?

Great unit, no trouble with anything. Easy to use. Was concerned if a power supply was going to be required, but it works great with the included USB cable (short one). Also loaded on the drive is the "WD Sync" software which automatically syncs up to your pre-determined file folders, and updates with a mouse click. The data is password protected, and encrypted.
