3 of 5 trouble with larger files Sunday, June 08, 2008
pk from New York City
I like this drive, but can't say I love it. It's a decent value, and it's a slick looking drive, BUT...it has trouble storing LARGE files, i.e., I tried transferring a large 12GB quicktime movie so I could go drop the file off with a client, and it wouldn't take it. Always seems to bring up an error whenever I try a larger file like that. Disappointing. I mean, what's the point of getting a 160GB drive if it can't handle 10GB files? So...if you've got tons of *little* files, this'd be a good drive for you, but...if you need to transfer *large* files via this drive, I would recommend getting something else.

I bring it to office everyday as a mean of saving and retrieving my personal stuffs. I have no problem with length of the cord. I'm using Dell D620 and have no problem with the power it requires. Had it for almost 6 months now with no problem so far.

2 of 5 Software Not upto the mark Wednesday, April 09, 2008

5 of 5 small light and portable works well Sunday, April 06, 2008
D Blanchard from Springfield NJ
Just what I needed right now, a small portable lightweight with a lot of room. I am so pleased with this that I have since ordered a 250 gig to go along with it. It works super easy and so far I have had no problems. The only thing I would like to improve is the speed. but for a portable with no power supply of it's own, I guess you can't have everything. overall I am very happy with this drive and I'm sure until they come up with a 160gig flash drive, this is as good as it gets.

4 of 5 Over all good Thursday, March 27, 2008
Bert from El Paso TX
This was very simple to set up and get running. The only problem I had was human error with the WDSYNC software. I had it to automatically sync when ever I opened the software. I had it to snyc 20 Gigs of music from a hard drive. Well the hard drive failed. I open the software and it started deleting music on my WD Passport. It didn't see the hard drive that failed so away it went. I was able to stop the operation after losing about 100 songs. So I now have it set to only sync when I tell it to. It copied the rest of the music to another location without a hitch.

5 of 5 WD external HDD is good! Thursday, March 27, 2008
Pete from Grapevine, TX
What can you say, WD puts out a product that is great to use and easy!!! My only thing is I wish HDD manufacturers would put out drives with no software clutter. Its not hard to get it off of there, but its really more of a nusance. Besides this I have no complaints and shipping from Buy.com was easy and fast!

4 of 5 Worth the money Sunday, February 24, 2008
A Customer from Dallas, TX
The 160GB back up drive is worth every penny, as it's a small portable backup media drive that can be carried with you everywhere you go. The only issue is that it has no external power supply, so it could have issues with certain laptops that consume inordinate amounts of power; luckily, I am using mine with my desktop, so I have no issues.

5 of 5 Good and value for money Thursday, February 21, 2008
Vipin from Folsom, CA
I am first time writing a review of any product I purchased. This is so good to have, I can't stop myself to write a review. It is really a good and easy to handle device for your day-to-day backup for personal and official files. I really like its auto sync feature and password protection feature. Size is really nice, fit in my pocket. Also it works with my Vista. Really worth to have it.

4 of 5 Quite Good Tuesday, February 12, 2008
Toby from Asheville, NC
I love the size and value of the drive. But during the set up I experienced a slight "hiccup." It wasn't quite clear how to get started once I downloaded the update, but I quickly figured it out. Overall, it's a great product and VERY quiet.

2 of 5 Vista compatibility is poor Friday, January 25, 2008
Carol in VA from Springfield VA
I purchased this drive because of all the reasons everyone else did. It is sleek and the value is great. BUT it won't work on any Vista computer I've tried. WD support advised me I needed to get the drivers for it from Windows. You know how far I got with that. I've seen mention of reformatting the drive so it will work with Vista - just shouldn't have to do this for something advertised that it is Vista compatibility.

2 of 5 Initially a great drive... Thursday, January 24, 2008
A Customer from Bloomington, IL
I got this drive as a backup for my laptop. Buy.com did a great job getting the product out quickly and it was as ordered. For the first 4 weeks or so, it worked great. I suddenly got the "click of death". I went through W.D. to get a replacement. The on-line RMA form was easy and quick to fill out. Unlike other RMA's that I have dealt with, the vendor requires that you either put $250 on hold on your credit card (at $250), or ship the drive back for replacement before another is shipped. Not wanting to take the chance that W.D. would not honor the warranty and I would be stuck with the bill (which I have read they have done to others), I shipped the drive back. It took W.D. about a week from the time they said they received my drive to the time that they shipped me a new one - a long time compared to what Buy.com could do. W.D. did ship the drive 2nd day air, but that doesn't make up for their clumsy, slow fulfillment policy, not to mention a drive that failed so quickly.

5 of 5 Good Value! Wednesday, January 23, 2008
Steve from Commerce Township, MI
Just purchased this drive as a back up to my laptop harddrive, works great and is easy to get started with. The pre-loaded software handles all the data transfer to the drive, and encrypts the data and password protects it too; keeping your data secure. I would recommend this as a good purchase. The only one thing regarding it's exterior is that it may get scratched easily. I have bought a cover from Target for $5 to protect it!

the Western Digital External drive is very convenient to carry. I have a mac and I've had no problems using it. You just have to make sure to format it so you can use it for both pc's and mac. I'm in school and I use it to download tons of lecture files and pictures. So far i've had no problems with it.

5 of 5 worth every penny Sunday, December 30, 2007
liv from Newark NJ
Bought it as backup for my e-library and love it. It doesn't work fine with my old IBM (I need a powered hub), but no problem with any other computer. Fast and (I hope) reliable. And cheap. The USB cable should be longer, but it is standard, you can buy a longer one anywhere. Worth every penny.

5 of 5 came fast and works flawlessly Thursday, December 20, 2007
liv from Newark NJ
I had it in two days, although they said nine :-) Transfers of 10 MBps, fast, reliable. Do change file system, however, if you have big files. NTFS or, if you work under Linux, efs3. Scratches easily, but who cares? And it was CHEAP. Highly recommended.

5 of 5 works like a champ Monday, December 17, 2007
Chris from New Port Richey, FL
Works as advertised. The only issue is it's geared towards XP and not Vista as far as selecting what to back up. You need to dig through the "what to back up" area to select the appropriate folders in Vista as they've been redesigned from XP. Example: My Documents is now just Documents in Vista, although when I migrated from XP a My Documents folder was created but it is only a "pointer" to the Vista Documents folder. A bit goofy but that's MS for you. Bottom line just make sure you're backing everything up and you'll be fine.

5 of 5 Western Digital rocks! Wednesday, December 12, 2007
Eddie from Palmyra, Va
One of the best external drives I own. The size is tiny, absolutely no noise, no external power supply required, and the USB plug is configured such that you can plug into the back of it which means you don't have to give up a port!

5 of 5 No problems with this device. Tuesday, December 11, 2007
A Customer from Hilo, HI
I read lots of reviews about these drives before ordering and many of them complained about not being able to get enough USB-port power to power them. I even ordered the USB-joiner thingy to get the power from two USB ports as a precaution. Never needed it. I tested this thing on several desktops and laptops (some 5+ years old) and they all worked fine. Plenty of power and recognized the drive immediately (all running linux, btw, plus one OSX). So, there may still be problems out there, but from my experience, they're not as bad as they sound from many of the reviews. good luck

5 of 5 Passport is the way to go Tuesday, December 11, 2007
Tony Ike from Arlington, VA
This WD Passport is really slick. It's much smaller than the WD My Book and very easy to set up and use. It's super light and super skinny... same thickness as a DVD case and about 1/3 as big. Who needs flash memory or USB when you got this bad boy.

5 of 5 Works great on MacBook Tuesday, December 11, 2007
A Customer from Chicago, IL
I ordered one of these up when Buy.com had them down at $85, so the value was outstanding. I was very relieved to find out that my MacBook (Core 2 Duo) provided enough power through the single USB cable too, that seemed to be issue for some computers.

5 of 5 A Lot of Power in a Little Package Tuesday, December 04, 2007
SkiTahoe99 from Oakland, CA
I can't believe how much storage is being squeezed into these little external portable drives. Nice that its powered off the USB cable, instead of having to plug in yet one more transformer. The only problem is that they are getting cheaper every day....but, alas, we can't wait forever for the absolute lowest price. A great buy!!

5 of 5 Great Hard Drive!! Thursday, November 29, 2007
G from Macon, GA
I bought this little guy to replace an old 30GB hard drive I had. This device is fast and gets it's power from the USB cable which is really cool (one less ac adapter to deal with). It has a nice design to it as well. I don't use the Western Digital software that came with it, though it may be of use to some. My only gripe if you will is that the cool looking blue light doesn't reflect any status like the larger Western Digital My Book drives. It lights up when it's plugged in and that's it. It doesn't flicker or change when the drive is in use. Great hard drive though!

5 of 5 Great for Windows and Linux Wednesday, November 28, 2007
Joe Berry from Baltimore, MD
I bought my drive primarily to backup my music collection (about 25 gb) as well as personal stuff I keep on my business laptop (running Win/2k). Works absolutely great. Could be a bit faster but that's the price/performance tradeoff. I also use the same drive on my Ubuntu 7.10 Linux box. When away from my home music server, I'll listen to my music that I had backed up onto the drive. Note that I made a conscientious decision to use FAT32 so that my drive would be Win and Linux compatible for reading and writing. I also bought a second drive to use as a backup drive for my wife's MacPro Book laptop. This one I reformatted to native Mac format (whatever that is) but it did work fine using FAT32.

5 of 5 LIttle in size, BIG IN STORAGE Wednesday, November 28, 2007
Love it, love it, love it. from North Hollywood, California
Wonderful product. Cannot find flaws with it. If I must find one, is that you cannot extend the length of the USB cable. I guess it has to do with the cable playing two roles, those of data and power transfer. If you could extend the length, this product would be PERFECT!

5 of 5 Meets my needs, and then some Wednesday, November 28, 2007
Kevin from Austin, TX
I bought this portable HDD (on sale) because I trust the name Western Digital, because of the sleek design, and because I really wanted to move away from an external hard drive with a power cord. I am extremely pleased with my purchase.
I experienced absolutely no problems installing, setting up, and using the backup software with my Toshiba Qosmio notebook. The WD Sync automatic backup software provides free, automatic updates that it downloads to the drive itself. It is also significantly faster than my previous method of copying and pasting specified folders to an external hard drive.
For each backup profile, you select all the folders on your hard drive that you want backed up. Anything you don't want, you don't have to back up. If you don't know what you want/need, you can back up your entire hard drive. Since I don't have anywhere near 160 GB of data, a feature I liked is that you can create multiple automatic backup profiles; I could help out a friend in a tough situation.
The backup itself is in a format readable only by WD Sync, so the files I wanted to share with friends I had to also copy in their natural format.
The drive doesn't install any proprietary software on other computers, so your friends won't worry about that when you share files with them.
Finally, it is indeed quite portable: it fits well in my pocket, or is virtually non-existent in my luggage.
Whether you need more or less than 160 GB, I recommend the Western Digital portable hard drives.

4 of 5 Easy to use for backups Tuesday, November 27, 2007
A Customer from Concord, CA
After just two months, I am sold on this product with the exception of the case. Within a week of purchase the case was scratched in several places. After two months, the shiny black original finish is an eyesore. I think WD should come up with a better package for this terrific device. Looks count!
