4 of 5 Mac users-this is spiffy for Time Machine Tuesday, December 11, 2007
    AG from Orange County, CA
I recently upgraded to an Apple Laptop and needed a bigger external hard drive. MyBook wasn't my first choice, but it was easy to deal with. It was already setup for a PC, but the manufacturer included a large print notification for Mac users and a website with instructions to reformat the drive. Though the picture shows it standing as a book, there are vents all around the edge, so I lay it on it's side. The lighted dials glow in a cyclical pattern according to how much data is on the drive (not really useful, but cute)

5 of 5 Works as advertised Wednesday, November 28, 2007
    A Customer from Jacksonville, FL
I'm not really a hardcore PC user but I needed an extra harddrive primarily because of a boat load of videos and photos that I needed to park outside my main drive. The hook up and operation is brainless which was my main requirement. Calling up files is as simple as any file on the computer. So it's a great back up and extra memory drive all in one. I probably could have installed a larger harddrive right in my computer but didn't feel confident to mess with it. This is just plug in and go (I guess I traded loading speed for ease of installation). Also, it's very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It has a nice modern look to it. I'm very satisfied.

    5 of 5 works without a hitch Tuesday, November 27, 2007
    dan from new york, NY
I've had this about two months, and it's worked without a hitch the whole time. This is my first external hard drive, so I have nothing to compare it to, but it was virtually automatic to set up, and I haven't had to think about it once, I just have another giant drive for backups. I love how it turns itself on and off with the computer. Not as fast as I'd hoped, but when you're copying tens of gigs over firewire, it will take a few minutes I suppose.

    5 of 5 Reliability + Bang for buck Saturday, November 24, 2007
J.G. McGowen from Lugoff, South Carolina
Quite simply the most reliable bang for buck drive on the market. Western Digital lives up to their expectations with yet another awesome product. Astheticaly one could not ask for a more subtle enclosure. The Dual Interface w/ support for Daisy chaining is great for those who want scalable storage. The USB and Firewire interfaces are more than fast enough for most everyday tasks, and bearable for heavy data transfers for the enthusiast. What amazes me the most is the reliability. It will automaticaly keep itself turned on after your PC is off or you've pressed the power button to finish writing just to make sure your data is safe!!! Ease of use? Plug & Play on Mac AND Linux had me up and running in less than a second, no software or configuration! Drive even supported being formatted in Ext3 for better data safety! All in all Western Digital has produced the Highest Quality drive for a competitive price. I'll be buying (and daisy chaining) more MyBook's in the future.

5 of 5 Great hardware, not so useful software Friday, July 27, 2007
    A Customer from Durham, NC
The WD Backup software provided didn't prove to be very useful for me running OS X 10.4.10, otherwise the product was great. The only problem that I experienced was that the hd needs to stop spinning before it is unplugged or it gets confused (so, eject, wait a few seconds, then unplug). Not a big deal. Great price and quality for a 320gb firewire drive

5 of 5 great external drive Thursday, March 15, 2007
    A Customer from Utah
This is a great external drive. Love that it has both usb and firewire...so that it can be daisy-chained to another drive. It is small and compact, looks a little like a fat book. I've enjoyed this drive so much that it is the second one I own. It runs quiet. It is a little slow to turn off but just watch and be patient and it does shut down. Overall it is a fantastic drive for your extra storage needs.

4 of 5 Efficient method for data backup, some program ins Sunday, February 04, 2007
John Coleman from Los Angeles, CA
Overall, I'd recommend this drive to anyone in need of a pick-up-and-go backup drive (*adds to list of things to take if apartment burns down*). It's aesthetically pleasing to put on your desk with all the other nice gadgets and does its job. To back things up I used Western Digital's programs downloaded from their site; they're pretty straight-forward and gets it done (though I have not yet tried to restore anything---WD's program packages the backup into propreitary incremental sequence files so you'd need the program to restore data). You can also just drop anything onto the drive through Windows Explorer/Mac Finder as if it were any regular external hard- or flash-drive. Only things that I can see improved are 1) there are top ventilation holes and dust-heavy homes will certainly have dust settled inside the casing in no time, 2) there's maybe one too many programs that are needed constnatly running to operate the drive and all its functions, 3) the WD Button Manager program sometimes hogs 100% of processor resources at Windows startup for no apparent reason--bug. Lastly, I was very very close to spending about $100 more for the white 500GB Premium but figured the 320GB model is more economical. And since you can chain several of these drives together, it would be more for your money if you purchase a second 320GB for a total of 640GB storage. I might have bad logic here but that's what I came to.

4 of 5 Reliable, a bit slow, spin down/power off issues. Friday, January 26, 2007
    James from winston-salem, nc
I have had this device for more than a year now and its has met my archival needs well. The included software (already on the drive) is simple to use but I have only ever used the 'advanced' option which is all that is really needed... Restoring files is easy and can be done via the manager or directly from the archive folder on the drive as the backup process creates a quick restore executable. You are able to pick individual files to restore rather than the whole archive. That said the device is quite slow when backing up whether using USB or firewire (firewire 400 other models support 800) The cache on this device is 8MB whereas other versions (including the 500GB version of this model) have 16MB caches. Average seek time is 8.7ms which is the same on all other models. The 'spin down' on this device is unpredictable! This is the power off feature and is supposed to be user controlled by pressing the 'blue' button or disconnection usb/firewire cable. This does not always work...product will not turn off ~15% of the time (must cut power to device). WD offers a utility for download but it predates this model and does not help. I love the device overall but will be 'upgrading' in the near future. If I choose WD I would consider the My Book Pro II 1Terabyte drive but likely will choose a different brand that PUBLISHES SOFTWARE/DRIVER UPDATES! (There are none)

    5 of 5 Great product Tuesday, January 02, 2007
    Jason from Springfield, PA
Very pleased with this product. I have a mac and a PC. Truly a great plug and play as I can connect and within seconds I am using the drive. Would recommend this, and I'm even thinking of getting another one (It's $22 cheaper than when I got mine 3 months ago!) Jump on this while you can.

Great product. Nice design, lightweight. Easy installation, works very fast both with USB 2.0 and FireWare. Unfortunately can not be connected to two computers simultaneously using both ports at the same time. Anyway - very good storage solution

A Customer from Ranch Palos Verdes, CA
Works exactly as promised, great design and look, very silent running, backs up my entire system quickly. I use mine for both general data store (photos, video etc)and for system back up, works well for both. I can now store a millions of digital photos of my kids. Great product at a fantastic price.
