5 of 5 Great Product. Monday, May 11, 2009 A Customer from Vancouver, WA
It was easy to setup and works great. The fire wire feature allows the drive to run faster than standard USB. I am looking into to buying another one soon. If you want it to work on Vista, you will have to reformat the drive to NTFS. It takes some time, but once it is completed the unit operates perfectly. If you have another backup program like Norton Ghost, you can delete the software that comes with the unit. Was this review helpful?

A solid external drive (replacing a fantom that never worked very well and then died). The versatility of the different connection options is great. The things I didn't like - mine did not come with an eSATA cable (only USB and Firewire). Also, reformatting for NTFS is needed (anyone connecting to a PC would certainly want that over FAT). Other than that - superb product. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great purchase Wednesday, February 18, 2009 A Customer from des moines, iowa
As always, quick delivery and at a great price. Product is pretty much plug and play. I did have to convert it from fat32 to Ntfs which took 12 hours to do, but glad u only have to do that only once. Overall, I've always like western digital products. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Better than Seagate Sunday, January 18, 2009 A Customer from Budd Lake, NJ
I used to think the Seagate ext drives were the way to go. Well I was wrong, this WD is faster, quieter and just better. What a fool i was Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great speed at a great price Thursday, January 01, 2009 Karl from Rock Island, IL
What's not to like? With the ESATA cable this unit is as fast as my internal hard drive. Great backup system. I don't use their encryption or compression software. In my experience those programs FAIL more than they work. A direct backup is the safest. If you're worried about someone STEALING your pictures of the Grand Canyon....get a life. 5 of 5 Great product and price Sunday, December 28, 2008 Kashif from White Plains, NY
Amazing drive. I'd been eyeing this for a while and finally decided on purchasing it. The best feature is that it has three interfaces (USB 2.0, Firewire and eSATA) unlike many other external hard drives out there. All I had to do was format it as an NTFS and partition the drive and it was good to go. I would recommend it to those looking for a backup drive. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Data Center on My Desktop Friday, September 19, 2008 Joe from Baltimore, MD
This device is working like a charm. As I quickly approach 4 TB of data in my music and video archive, this unit is providing me with flexibility as I perform data migration between my various systems. WD is providing a quality product. Stupid simple! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Western Digital My Book Home Edition 1TB - Triple Wednesday, September 17, 2008 Matie Singh from Brooklyn, NY
I've always trusted the "Western Digital" name so buying this external hard drive for that price was an amazing deal. It fits comfortably on my computer desk. It's very easy to transport from one computer to the next. Only problem is I have to manually plug it in every time I turn on my compter as it does not allow the computer to boot up if I leave it on the system permanently. Overall, its a great product to have

5 of 5 My Book Home Edition 1Tb Saturday, July 26, 2008 A Customer from Twin Cities, MN
Plugged it in and it worked right out of the box. Since it wasn't formatted for Mac, had to use the Disk Utility (Mac OS) to format the drive. First I tried to erase it, but it would not take. Then I remembered (from previous cases), that I had to partition it (at the drive level, rather than the partition level) in order for things to work.
After that (2 partitions), no problems. It has become locked, once (so far) after the computer went to sleep. This has been an ongoing issue with a LaCie drive that I previously used for Time Machine. Still not sure what is causing that.
Also, it appeared to go completely dead earlier this week. Turned out to be a bad connection at the power connection. I had tried that several times, but upon trying the USB (instead of Firewire) cable, suddenly it came to life. I changed back to the firewire cable, and all has been good since.
Much quieter than the computer, and than my 320Mb LaCie. Also like the power supply being right at the plug, instead of a brick on the desk. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 1TB is a lot Monday, April 28, 2008 Ye from Chicago, IL
First off, I haven't tried it with eSATA so I can't make that comparison. That said, the USB is a little slow, but is reasonable for most tasks. The drive is fairly quite (better than my older My Book Essential Edition 320gb drive). The LED display on the front is actually somewhat annoying, so I just keep the drive facing the back of my desk. The capacity meter is essentially useless for a drive this size.
Works fine with Vista. I don't use any of the programs that come with it so have no opinions on them. Was this review helpful?

A snap to set up. Just connect it and let the computer (WinXP) recognize it. After that...just copy the data you want to store. It couldn't be easier.
This is actually my second drive and my 4th purchase from Buy.com. I got it at the absolute lowest price by taking advantage of the Buy.com Visa card the for the first purchase and the Revolution Credit Card the second purchase. It was easy to apply, on-line approval and I saved $50 both times.
The shipping through Buy.com was free, although I forgot to check the right shipping method, their customer service was very friendly and accommodating and refunded the erroneous amount. The credit posted within 3 working days. I ordered the drive on a Monday afternoon and it was delivered to my on Tuesday (the following day). I was IMPRESSED. The drive was very well packaged preventing any shipping damage and was very easy to connect. I will make any of my future computer and peripheral purchases from Buy.com. You can't beat the price, shipping, or service! (I tried, LOL)
I purchased my first drive of this model (Model #: WDC WDH1CS10000N) about 7 months ago and have been "hooked" on the eSATA performance ever since. It is blazing fast. I love it!
The difference in speed between firewire and eSATA is amazing. My previous drive was a USB/Firewire 400 and seemed slow at best.
The drive connects via an eSATA cable to an Express Card, which I purchased for my laptop. The performance increase was immediately apparent. I am very happy with this purchase and have not experienced any problems since I purchased the first one (Oct 2007).
The complaint I have is when the drive goes into powersaving mode, it takes a good 60 seconds or so to wake up. This may be only because of my type of connection (ExpressCard on Laptop), but I am happy to endure this wait time if that is all that I can find wrong with this drive.

5 of 5 Big, Quiet, Small Footprint Tuesday, January 29, 2008 MJR from San Diego, CA
Installation and setup was a snap. Just unpack the drive, and plug it in. The drive comes formatted in FAT32, so if you want NTFS, you must reformat the drive. WD included a sleek utility that will even copy all included software to your hard drive, so you won't lose the software if you want to reformat the drive. Overall a great drive at a great price. 4 of 5 Good deal overall Saturday, January 26, 2008 A Customer from NW Ohio
I purchased this item about a month ago. It was very easy to setup and start using. The amount of storage is exactly what I was looking for. The only thing that concerns me is that every now and then, for no apparent reason, my computers (laptop & desktop) don't recognize it as being there. When this happens I have to reboot my pc and everything is fine. Otherwise I love it. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Great Storage Solution in an Attractive Package at Thursday, January 17, 2008 Chris from San Jose, CA
Having run out of physical space in my case(which currently houses 5 HDDs, along with a DVD and floppy drive), I looked to an external hard drive to accomodate my growing storage needs. Although high price tags had deterred me from 1TB externals in the past, recent price cuts have made these drives an attractive option. While comparing 1TB externals, I noticed that many came from lesser known manufacturers. Having had great experiences with WD and Seagate products in the past, I opted to focus on their external product lines, although I'm sure other manufacturers also have good offerings.

For the size and interface I was looking for, WD offered a better price point than Seagate, so I went with the 1TB WD triple interface My Book unit. I was extremely pleased when it arrived in less than 3 days(even with budget shipping) and worked flawlessly right out of the box, as advertised. Although USB 2.0 usually has higher peak transfer rates, I opted to connect it via FireWire for slightly better average transfer rates. It's also nice knowing I have an eSATA connection ready that will perform even faster when I eventually upgrade my current machine.

The drive itself has a very appealing form factor, and does indeed look a lot like an unassuming book sitting on my desk. Most other externals I've seen, with the exception of Seagate units, have been housed in either gaudy shiny cases or huge bulbous rectangular monstrosities, so I was glad I was able to aqcuire such a nice looking drive, from a reputable manufacturer, at a great price point. Perhaps my only minor gripe is that the drive comes preformatted in FAT32, presumably to work universally across all platforms. Since I prefer the stability of NTFS, and I don't intend to run the drive with a MAC, I opted to reformat it in NTFS. The process was as quick and painless as it is with an internal drive.
With digital media files consuming more and more space, the 20/40/60/80/100GB drives that seemed huge 5 years ago just aren't up to the task nowadays. While adding additional internal storage is a simple task, some users may not feel comfortable tinkering inside their cases or breaking the warranty seal on their pre-built boxes. While writable media is a viable(although time consuming) option, the cost of the media along with the physical space to store it are the limiting factors. As such, external storage is often the easiest solution. With the price of the technology getting lower and lower, even 1TB+ external drives are becoming more and more affordable. With its flexible connection options, ease of use, attractive design, and great price point, the WD 1TB Triple Interface My Book Home Edition is a very appealing external storage solution from a reputable manufacturer. 5 of 5 Great value, quiet, perfect for my needs Wednesday, January 16, 2008 Rob from Woodinville, WA
I purchased two of these drives to serve as a backup solution primarily. I also serve music from them. I use the backup software to backup documents and pictues. The software works great although I wish I could get it to only run at a certain time of the night. It seems to run continuously.
I also use the synch software to synch the two drives I bought with each other. I do this so I can store one drive off-site.
I have been impressed with how quiet the two drives are. I haven't really optimized them for performance but they seem to work pretty well. I use Firewire 400 for now since I don't have eSATA but it's nice that these drives support eSATA.
There are lots of choices in this market so it's likely there are better options but I'm happy.
I'm annoyed at the random Buy.com coupons and discounts that you have to use to get the best price. I signed up for a buy.com credit card that I purchased the first drive with just to get a $30 discount. I then shredded the card and cancelled it. I also got a coupon for 5% off that I used on the second one. So, if you're creative you can get a slightly better deal. I'd just prefer to get the best price without having to jump through hoops. 3 of 5 So-so glitchiness Thursday, December 27, 2007 Will from Annapolis MD
I find the drive to be perfect when it doesn't go to sleep, but when it does it tends to misbehave and not come on sometimes, needing to be unplugged and re-plugged. Also the firewire interface does not connect with my computer, whereas my 500 GB Western Digital did no problem. I am using it with the eSATA. I'm happy to have the breathing room this drive offers in terms of disk space. It's still magnetic and as such its wise to back up anything you really really need.
Good luck!

First, I apologize for using the reviews area for this, but buy.com does not have a discussion area.
Anyway, I almost bought this based on the two 5-star reviews here at buy.com. However, there is a landslide of negative reviews over at Amazon. Apparently the drive has lots of issues. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Product Friday, November 30, 2007 A Customer from Provo, UT
This hard drive is a great buy. The interface options are great (USB 2.0, eSATA & Firewire 400). The usb connection is a usb-mini instead of a standard a to b. It comes with a usb cable so it's not a big deal but if you want to move it to someone elses computer just make sure you take your cable with you or that they have a mini usb cable (more people seem to have an a to b cable laying around). 5 of 5 1TB Western Digital USB/Firewire/eSATA external Ha Friday, November 30, 2007 kron45 from Herndon, VA
I received the "My Book" Western Digital 1TB eSATA external Hard Drive within 2 days of ordering it via UPS. It only too 3 minutes to hook it up via an eSATA express card to my laptop computer. The eSATA card had to be purchased separately. The drive was immediately recognized; however, if needed, it also included installation software on the drive itself. So far I had it for a month as it is almost filled to capacity. I have 800GB of data (videos, pictures, and music) stored on it. The transfer time from either external USB, Firewire, or internal hard drive (laptop) is EXTREMLY fast. USB only transfers data at an advertised 400MB/sec; Firewire 400 at 480MB/sec; Firewire 800 is much faster than Firewire 400 but I do not have that connection so I could not "test" it. I transferred 12GB of files via USB within 30 minutes, about the same on Firewire, on eSATA the same data took less than 7 minutes to transfer. I am very happy with my purchase, this drive will serve as a back-up drive for my other external drives.
My experience with Buy.com extremely positive; the order was secure, I saved a lot of money over competitive sites, and the delivery was 4x faster than I expected, despite picking the slowest (and cheapest) delivery option. I will continue to use Buy.com for all future purchases. Was this review helpful?
