Western Digital Elements 640GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - Black - WDE1UBK6400N

I got this hard drive incredibly cheap several months ago. I use it to back up photos and such. Haven't had any problems with it all all. Works great. Easy to use.

I have had this 640GB elements hard drive for three weeks, but one day after 2 hours of being plugged in continuously, it became very hot and then crushed. I will not buy anything from western digital again.

had to send it back, drive failed also - no light - no power switch other than this, VERY SOLID construction, I wish more external hard drives were built like this and especially the lie-flat versus "waiting to fall over" is a nice design.

Not much to hoot and holler about. It's 640GB, it's USB, plug it in and it works. I have it connected to my Windows Home Server and am using it to store backups of systems on my network. I wouldn't use it for any seriously important data but it's perfect as a backup drive or even a semi portable drive because it's not all that big.

Excellent product!! I am so glad I bought it. I was initially concerned that I got less than the advertised amount of GB's but the WD tech's explained that the 596 GB capacity was the equivalent of 640 GB's but in the decimal notation---or something round-about that. Anyhoo, do not be alarmed as I was if you order this product and only see 596 GB capacity. I is very portable and runs quietly. I am 100% satisfied.

I've only had it for a short time but this hard-drive was really Plug & play. No complications whatsoever. I was also able to transfer all files from the hard-drive that I was replacing without any trouble from this hard-drive. And now, this little black box works quietly & invisibly, and gives me lots of room for files of all kinds, and doesn't cause any errors or overheat like the one I replaced.

Easy to install plug and play HD. The only con would be that there's no light indicating whether it's on, but it works great, and I'm happy with it. I love buy.com!

I'm very impressed with this external HD...I recently had purchased a 750gb western digital HD for a bit more money for DVR recordings and decided to pick one of these up as the price was very good for similar storage capacity. Setup was quick & simple on all of my pc's and its got a ton of space and haven't had a hiccup yet. To anyone expecting this to be a portable HD you are mistaken, it does need its own power source, but other than that its an awesome bargain for the money.

This unit looks great and works really well. It is virtually silent. It also has a very sturdy feel. I would buy another one without hesitation. If the need is for maximum mobility, a USB-powered device would be preferable. This unit is easy to move around.

The drive is very fast, runs cool, and performs excellently. The case feels heavy and well constructed. It could be a little noisy but not annoyingly so. I decided to buy this drive after some bad experiences with third party external drive casings, those would always have power issues, either not providing enough juice for a drive or failing after a few minutes of use. So I thought that buying the whole thing from a renowned company should work, and it does. I use without any problems as a share drive between my Macs and PCs. I also found out, well this was new to me, that the drive will put itself into sleep mode when there is no USB connection available. I have no way to know how much energy is saved in this mode, this feature is not mentioned in the manuals. All in all an excellent drive that is only shadowed by new ones with even larger capacities.

The Western Digital Elements 640GB - WDE1UBK6400N is just all the good things everyone else is saying. Very quiet! It's also of very solid construction and has a clean, simple design. I only have one small issue with the drive - the drive activity light (DAL) is in the back where the cabling is. So if your someone like me who has a habit of looking at the DAL to verify things are going as planned, you can't place the drive with the "front" facing in direct line of sight. Small point, but one of those "what were they thinking" things. However, it doesn't seem to be too much an issue with other users .... and it is a very good drive! Performs as advertised.

So far so good. Setup was a snap and no formatting was necessary. I transferred about 120 GB of files and was surprised how fast it went. For the $$$ you can't go wrong.

This is a very quite and a very fast hard drive. Shipping was extremely fast from buy.com. No setup or formatting was necessary. Hookup was simple and very easy. I am very satisfied with this product

Casing is one of a kind with its solid metal finish and rubber grip around its corner. Price is excellent and performance is exceptional. Excellent for backing up almost all data including multimedia. Speed and performance is fine. Weight is slightly scaled up. Its perfect for computer usage however maybe little big for laptop on go users. Over all this product is two thumbs up. I would recommend this product to anyone. Cheers

I always use other external HDDs but the price dictated my decision. I am ok with this HDD you have to reformat to NTFS if you want to copy or move extremely large files. I wish i would have thought of that before i stored data there. The HDD light is in the rear not easily seen. I LOVE WD internal HDDs but I am so-so with this drive.

Mine is on and working fine all the time that I have my computer on. It's quiet and you don't even know it's there taking care of your backup in real time. I like the ease of use right out of the box, PLUS the great price and delivery service from BUY.COM.

Does exactly what its supposed to do, and it does it well. I would recommend this to anyone who needs some more storage space, compared to other harddrives, price is great. Only con as mentioned before, external power supply is needed.

Looks nice if you like black. Good value for the price (70 US) Its my 5th external hard drive, and its bigger cheaper and just as fast as my 4 others. I dont know if it was my computer or the drive but I had to reformat it before it would let me transfer large .iso files. Any way its been working great ever since.

This is a good drive for the money. Not too big and feels very solid. Runs quiet and cool. Worked right out of the box for me with pc's running Vista and XP. Good backup utility software included as well. Good price, but it seems like external drive prices continue to drop....

everything is good about this product except for one thing: for some reason I can't transfer file bigger than 4gb. other hard drive with less memory could do it.

Very impressed with this external hard drive. I did find out though...I have to shut down my PC before disconnecting the hard drive. For some reason if i just "safely remove" the drive...the next time I turn off my pc...it will crash! Weird..but not a big deal for all the storage i have now.

Shipping was extremely fast from buy.com. Hard drive is compact and very quiet. I moved a 1,000 pictures from my PC to this hard drive in a matter or minutes. Great product and the price was cheap for this much storage.

I was apprehensive about buying any external hard drive. I'm not very computer savvy, but I needed to back up music and pictures and some of my documents. This is a good product. There is one problem - it has formatting that will not allow large files such as 1 GB or more to be added to it. My understanding now is that it comes formatted in FAT32 and needs to be reformatted to NTFS which I will do when I get around to using it regularly. I noticed this issue only after I started to use it. Otherwise it's a great value.

I've been using as a time machine backup on my macbook pro and works great. Makes a little noise when accessed but not bad. Also a little larger than I expected but it's a stationary HD not portable so thats fine.

Even though storage keeps getting less expensive (by the day it seems), the Buy.com price for this drive was too hard to ignore, especially when I needed the extra capacity for a specific back-up purpose anyway. Aside from the price, the drive is solid and functions as well as one would expect from a WD drive.

The only bad thing about it is the product sais 640Gb capacity, but really the capacity is only 596Gb, it's not much, but 50gigs is something to think about, besides that a great product, great price and great performance.

What more can you ask for: it is small, quiet, has lots of space and is inexpensive. I reformatted it into three partitions so I can back up my three internal hard dives without the fuss of CDs or DVDs. I feel I got my money's worth

The WDE1UBK6400N Elements 640GB is a great little backup hard drive. No setup or formatting was necessary, just plug it and it automatically turns on or off when you start or power down your computer. It’s quiet and remains relatively cool. I would recommend it to anyone; I have been using it more than a month with no problems.

Had to format for NFTS. Thought that was rather strange. However, has worked great since. Not a big deal, but wish it would stand up well on it's side to save real estate on my desktop. Doesn't stack well either...have a 1TB Elements and when I stacked them one on top of the other, there was quite a heat buildup. Had to separate them.

So far so good, had to reformat it out of the box to get it to read vista, ran extensive disk diagnostics on it before use and drive came thru with flying colors, holds alot but is only about 600gig not 640, powers down after 10mins of inactivity, very solid feel and quiet,

Shipping was extremely fast from buy.com. I'm not much of a computer geek but bought this to back up my desktop and laptop computers and also to store my home movies on it. After reading all the reviews on several sites I noticed many saying to reformat in NTFS which was no problem and took no time at all, back up of both computers was a breeze, but now the hard part of downloading 30 years of video.... CONS: a litle big and heavy

Fast, quiet, good deal for the price. Only con, if you could call it that, is that it makes no sound, has no light, nothing to indicate it is working, but it is. Am very satisfied with the speed. As usual, very fast delivery through Buy.com.
