3 of 5 Pretty ok drive Friday, January 04, 2008
    PT Doc from Kuna, ID

Bought about 18 months ago. Price was great at $145 and needed the firewire (didn't have USB 2.0). Setup fairly easy. Worked pretty well, but didn't get a lot of use. Held everything I needed it to. Recently started to fail (3 months ago) on boot-up and then has quit altogether. Never been dropped and well ventilated. Maybe bad drive. Sending back to WD on RMA (still under warranty by their books-ok with me). We'll see how this one goes. Not a bad setup with the front USB, maybe just a bad drive.

    2 of 5 18 months in, and it's dying Friday, November 23, 2007
    Damian from New York
Worked great up until now. Now it's making a VERY loud clicking noise when it tries to spin down. At least there's some warning of what I assume is impending failure. All this 6 months after the warranty expired...

4 of 5 Works As Advertised Friday, October 27, 2006
    flfbreck from Fairfax, VA
Within a week of buying, a much better deal was available on buy.com, so I wish I had waited a little. The drive takes a little work to set up (at least if you use the firewire connection) and it didn't seem to work as fast with firewire as I expected. Still, it did what it said and seems to do it quite well, so for overall use, it will serve well.

5 of 5 Plug and play Thursday, October 26, 2006
A Customer from New Haven, CT
I connected the drive via the Firewire interface to my PowerMac, reformatted the drive with Disk Utility into two 150 Gb volumes with no problem. The drive operation is very quiet compared with the old 80 Gb drive it replaced.

5 of 5 Dead quiet and solid performance Monday, July 17, 2006
    A Customer from Philadelphia, PA
I own two of these drives now and I've had them for over 6 months. they are so quiet that I can barely tell they are on (and mine are on and running constantly). I am considering getting a 500gb My Book drives, but I just returned a 400gb because it was as loud as a hair dryer. Surely the cooling fan doesn't have to run all the time? Why can't they use a quiet fan? I will try a 500gb My book, but if that is also loud, I return it and get another ol' reliable WDXB3200JB !!

5 of 5 One of the better ones! Thursday, May 18, 2006
    A Customer from Parlin, NJ
I have used several brands of external hard drives and by far this was one of the best. Silent in its' operations and slender enough to fit in the corner or behind ones setup. I like the fact that it allows for air to flow around the drive to help with the temperature of the product. The Hub functionality is great too as you have a port in the front as well as the back in which can be used and the product need only be plugged in, not turned on for you to be able to utilize this functionality. Then there is the one touch copying done either automatically (when set up) or manually.

5 of 5 Not designed as network storage Thursday, May 11, 2006
    jack10562 from Ossining, NY
Setup and install was a snap, Windows (XPh) recognized the device, I then formatted and partitioned the drive with ease. I did not use the included software as I have other data backup software. I bought this drive with the intention of connecting it on a home network, physically connected to one machine and accessible as a share to others on a LAN. It turns out that this configuration is unsupported, however it can be accomplished, although this requires some effort. The drive is silent, and so far I am very pleased with it.

5 of 5 Setup easily, nice built Wednesday, May 10, 2006
A Customer from St. Louis, Missouri
I received the drive in 2 days - fast shipping, considering I chose the free shipping from buy.com. The drive arrived in good shape. Setting up is a snap. I do have to go to WD website to get the instructions to reformat the drive into NTFS format. It came in the FAT32 format. Since the drive was empty, reformat only takes 1-2 minutes.

    5 of 5 Wish I bought two... Thursday, January 26, 2006
    Jay from Cleveland, OH
I have a 250 Maxtor One Touch, a 160 Maxtor One Touch, a 60gb 2.5 inch Hotdrive, all firewire/USB combos. I got the Western Digital at Chirstmas becuase it was a steal after rebates at $180 (ish) and it is my new favorite. It is recognized more quickly than any of my other drives, no matter which position in the connections it has, it is quieter than all the others, and it has some really great features that I thought I didn't care about, but which end up being nice. First, it has a smart off feature that only turns the HD off after data transfer is complete, and it actually works. It also has a USB port on the front, which is pretty handy. Yes its exterior is a little bigger than the maxtors, and yes it has that HP look about it with its grey sides and aluminum edges, but it is neutral enough to go with a either my iMac or my Dell.

4 of 5 Software Requires Learning Curve Friday, November 11, 2005
    Billy Joe from Tacoma, WA
Much larger than my other external hard drives, but clearly well built and solid. As mentioned elsewhere, contains additional ports which add functionality. The setup instructions won't get it going, unless you already know how to initialize a hard drive under XP. The software, which is integrated into the automatic features of the unit is complex and requires a learning curve, especially if you want to create backups of specific directories, or particular files. So...I'm using the unit as a backup hard drive, with an alternative backup software, and for that purpose, it's fine...just no automatic features. I also have the Simpletech 250GB, and though not as substantial a unit, I like it better.

5 of 5 Western Digital does it again! Tuesday, October 25, 2005
    w.pelak from Rockford, Michigan
If a dummy like me can get this unit to work in a few easy steps it is worth bragging about. Quiet as a mouse, but strong like ox, all my data is now backed up just in case! 320GB will more then meet my needs. So now my internal 120GB has a big brother to keep it company, way to go WD......Go western young man! Oh! wait I am 56, too old to be a tekkie!

    5 of 5 Nice pick Saturday, July 16, 2005
    Sephage from PA
It works aqnd performs well. But be careful if using with a USB ad-on PCI card, it is not compatible with some of the chipsets (IOGEAR seems to work fine). A minor cavil - if you lose power, it will not automatically turn back on. Otherwise a very good HD.
