5 of 5 Great Value Saturday, February 07, 2009 Neil from Broken Arrow, OK
First off, everything I've ordered through buy.com (either from there or third party) has exceeded my expectations. The item always arrives before expected and even when I had to return a previous item for this the process was very easy. The drive itself is a great value for the price and the features you get makes it worth while. Being an OEM drive was perfect since it was a direct replacement and I only needed the drive. 80 gig 7200 rpm and 8 mb buffer, runs great. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Buy! Monday, January 19, 2009 Peggy from Barnwell, SC
Hard drive was very easy to install, mounted without any additional hardware. Worked as plug and play so installation went amazingly smooth. Great product, shipped within time specified. Very happy with product. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Buy.com card a deal maker Monday, December 29, 2008 A Customer from Dunnellon, FL
Hard drive was standard but the kickback from the throwaway new Chase Visa card made the net cost a winner. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Excellent OEM Drive Monday, December 08, 2008 mw from Racine, WI
This OEM 80GB drive is great. It's very quiet and it spins right up. What else is there to say! For the people complaining about no screws and no cables, well no kidding. If you researched it and looked look up the model, you'd notice its an OEM drive and not a retail box. Use your current screws, or use one of the hundred you have laying around. This drive, under $50 and it easily replaces the HD in the kids computer. Was this review helpful?

This is the second WD800JB Hard Drive I have purchased from Buy.com. I use them to replace drives in older Win 98 machines and then I usually install Win XP that I buy from a re-seller.
What are these guys talking about "cables and screws"?
I use the ribbon cable already in the machine and the old hard drive mounting screws that hold the hard drive I am replacing.
No problems at all. I do not need the Western Digital software to install the drive. (But it is free to download at the Western Digital site if you want it!) The Win XP bootable install disk recognizes the drive and from there I can format and partition. I guess the only problem would be if the old BIOS did not recognize the hard drive but so far the old BIOS in these machines sees the new hard drives with no problem.
Don't be afraid to try installing one of these. From my experience "SO FAR" they are pretty much plug and play. I am buying another one right now to put in an old white box computer that I bought from one of those Russian Techo guys at a computer show. Was this review helpful?

It seems that there is some confusion about packaging on this drive. Western Digital lists two part numbers for this drive.
1. WD800JB & 2. WD800JBRTL 1 is the bare drive no installation stuff & 2 is the retail package. Buy.Com has both 1 @ about $60 & 2 the retail version @ about $80. Prices change on these things so check for current prices.
Excellent drive. Fast Quiet & a solid reputation for reliability. The 8Meg buffer sets it apart, most others are only 2Meg Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Quiet, quick, much better than my Maxtor Saturday, February 19, 2005 Galph from Chicago, IL
I have got this hard driver for about half a year, so far I love it. It's much quieter and faster than my old 40G Maxtor which I have got 4 years ago. It's easy to put it in my PC. I have tried it on my old PII300, and an AMD box, both worked great. Love it! Was this review helpful?

To make explicit what the other reviewers say: This is not a retail item. This purchase is for the drive only. Why is this not made clear? Aside from the reviewers, no where in the product description does it say that you are paying for the drive only. I wanted those cables (found in retail boxes)! BTW, the list price of $160 that is quoted above is for a retail box product a year or two ago. In no way is a 80 gig HD currently worth 160. Look around if you don't believe me. Buy.com asked 74 for this product. This is a pretty good value for a retail box. Since this is for the drive only, the price is actually slightly high. Was this review helpful?

When my old WD drive finally kicked, I decided to take the step towards Ultra ATA100. Combined with the SIIG ATA100 PCI card, my old P3 500, 512mg ram finally has the speed it's been lacking. It's amazing but a new harddrive config really speeds up system performance. The 8mg buffer does a great job, and application launching is now a quick response. I really recommend this drive, but beware, it comes with nothing. You'll have to obtain EIDE cables, and mounting brackets and screws. Great buy! Was this review helpful?

I bought this hard drive to replace the 10gb drive in my e-Machine 600IS because I was rapidly running out of room. With a previous upgrade to 256 MB Ram, this hard drive makes this computer hum even though it only has a Pentium III 600 processor. The new hard drive was very quick and easy to install using the software from Western Digital (downloaded before removing old drive) to partition the new one and copy the contents to the new drive (setting new drive as master and old as slave). I was really surprised with the how fast my computer is now - a real benefit of the 8 MB cache. I have used other hard drives in various makes and models of computers at work, but the Western Digital Caviar 80 GB with 8 MB cache is the best. Just be sure to use Western Digital's installation software - the key to a successful installation and copy. Was this review helpful?

The Western Digital Special Edition is a great drive. It is fast and quiet. There were no bad sectors on the initial scan of the disk, as I have found on previous disk drives. The one drawback with this disk as purchased from Buy.Com is that only the Disk drive came. Western Digital's web site indicates that it should come with mounting screws, a cable and installation software. I am using the drive as a slave drive, so the cable and software were not vital, but mounting screws the correct size for the drive are hard to find.
If you are computer savvy, and have the hardware already, this Hard Drive is an excellent value.
If you are not computer savvy, or do not have the mounting screws and cable, I would recommend buying this drive with the entire kit. Overall, I think this is a great drive. Was this review helpful?
