I was dissappointed in Buy.com for not clearly stating that this drive does not come with instructions or any mounting hardware. Other sites offer bare drives for lower prices, but I purchased this drive from Buy.com because I didn't want the hassle of going out and getting screws and cables. Was this review helpful?

Owning a computer services company, it amuzes me when a novice buys technical computer components and complain because *they* don't know what they are doing.
The main reason(s) consumers choose to purchase online is convenience and price. The reason the price is lower is due to the lack of having to have a staff to talk you through the purchase over a phone.
Western Digital Caviar drives are a great drive, but understand terms like OEM, bare bones, etc. when purchasing computer components. Was this review helpful?

Like the rewier before me, this drive has ABSOLUTELY NO INSTRUCTIONS with it. It is a `bare drive'. Buy.Com MUST state this clearly in the product description. Lately Buy.Com is selling these bare drives. Its a hassle, I spent about 2 hours over 3-4 days figuring out all the instructions because I did not want to mess up the instal. I emailed WD Tech Support, got an automated response that was partly helpful. NOT FOR NOVICES ( if you never installed one before-dont do this). WD actually has a nice DOS based utility that was quite helpful. OTOH, I also bought an IBM Deskstar from Buy.Com at the same time, and IBM does not even support it. Fujitsu supports it, and their website had no useful info. I looked in my box of old software and found an older IBM CD that had software which I was able to reconfigure and use, again spent 2-3 hours figuring it out.
Punch line- always make sure you have the whole KIT and not just the bare drive, I would spend additional 10 bucks if an option to buy the kit was available. Was this review helpful?

I've had 14 Different WDC Hard Drives over the years and Only one of these went bad. This model 120Gb HD [2mb buffer=BB] is overpriced in this case[IMHO] because the JB [8mb buffer] model can be had for about $5-10 more. However, I always buy WDC now, and BUY.com has had excellent deals on the WDC JB 160Gb, 180Gb, and 200Gb models in the recent past! Was this review helpful?
