I've had the My Book 750GB Home Edition Hard Drive for about 1 month now. I really like. Plenty of space. Only 10% full at the moment. I use it primarily for Windows Vista Complete PC Backup but I also use the included WD Anywhere Backup. The combination of the two assures me I have an up-to-date backup. I run the Windows backup once a month or before each software install. The WD software is really neat because it does a file watch of all directories I specify and automatically backs up a file once it is changed. Note - the WD software is NOT trial-wear, however the product key is on small sticker placed on the hard drive's instruction sheet, which I didn't notice until WD's Tech Support pointed it out. Also, there is no monthly fee to use the WD Backup software where the target is the external hard drive. That said, there are some versions of the My Book that include software that also allows online backup, for a fee. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Nice drive. Wednesday, July 09, 2008 A Customer from Pittsburgh, PA
I'm using this drive with a Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.3 (Leopard). It works well and seems well made. It's very quiet which I really value. I've only used the Firewire port so far.
I needed to upgrade the drive's firmware to make it work reliably with (Leopard) 10.5. The upgrade proved to be difficult and I actually had to use an iBook I had running Mac OS X 10.4 to get the firmware updater to work (it never worked under 10.5). Once I got the firmware applied it has worked flawlessly with 10.5. Was this review helpful?

Love the 3 interfaces built in USB, Firewire and ESATA not offered on other models. Works great. Had to reformat the FAT32 to NTFS ~2 hours to store larger video files. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 won't boot Leopard - Mac OSX 10.5 Saturday, May 17, 2008 dragonfly from Deer Creek, Yuba River watershed
I installed Leopard on this external drive (using Firewire 400 to connect) and although the installation seemed to go smoothly, at the end of the installation when it restarts (and you add your personal information and transfer info from another drive if you want) it wouldn't boot up from the Western Digital external drive - it booted up from my internal drive with Tiger 10.4...
After erasing the Western Digital external hard drive (making sure it was formatted and partitioned correctly) and installing Leopard two more times with the same results i called up Western Digital and they told me they don't support their hard drives as "boot drives", and i now see why - because for some reason they designed it not to be a boot drive (of course they never tell you this in the specs)...
i went out and bought a Maxtor Firewire external drive and installed Leopard on it and it booted up the first time and has worked fine - but for best results on an external boot drive for a Mac you can't beat a Lacie drive... Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Nice, but could be better Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Brainster79 from York, PA
Good price, good product, easy to use, but could be better. I find that writing to the drive slows down my system a little too much for my liking, but considering I am often writing large files to it I guess a slow down is to be expected. Also, the preloaded trial software is a waste of time. I want to be able to automatically back up files without paying a fee. It would be nice if WD built this into the drive instead of pushing costly monthly services. Was this review helpful?

work right out the box, just plug in and you're ready to do business. It comes with 30 trial back up software, which i do not need so i just deleted it.
The only is that it comes with FAT32 preformatted, which mean If you plan to transfer file larger than 4GB, you will run into problem. However, I reformat it to NTFS (the format time is ridiculously long, over 8 hrs)
other than that, it's easy to use, quiet, and keep kool pretty well. One feature that I found particularly useful with all My Book is the smart energy saving. Turn on and off with your system, nice feature. Was this review helpful?
