5 of 5 Follow some simple instructions Monday, July 27, 2009
    Harold from Clearwater, FL

First, this drive works as advertised on a 3 year old laptop PC and 6 mo old desktop PC. Out of the box I reformatted the WD 320 from FAT 32 to NTFS, allowing me to put larger than 4gb files on the drive. That also deletes the WD auto backup program and any partitions that were installed from the WD factory. The entire reformatting process took about 60 seconds from the first click to completion. If you don't know how, go to "My Computer" (if you have Windows XP) right click on the WD hard drive icon after it's connected and recognized by your PC, select properties, then select format, select NTFS click OK. This option wipes all info from the WD so make sure to do this when the drive is new so you don;t lose any data. The newely formatted WD is now ready to eccept +4gb files and there's no software or partitions to mess with. It's essentiaslly a slave to your existing hard drive. I purchased the 400gb for my father in law and he loves it also.

    4 of 5 Where Do I Begin? Thursday, April 16, 2009
A Customer from New York, NY
The passport is excellent, but it comes with essentially NO documentation, and pre-loaded software that is not intuitively easy to use. The price is right, but I would have been willing to pay a few more dollars to get some instructions on how to use or modify the the preloaded software.

5 of 5 Good USB External Hard Drive Sunday, April 12, 2009
    Rich from Lake Oswego, OR.
First let me say that this WD USB external hard drive has performed flawlessly as a backup drive (Time Machine) with my Macbook for about a week now. I wouldn't expect less. I used to be a Seagate man because they were usually superior to WD products, but over the past few years WD has caught up and both companies offer very high quality products now. I bought this one from Buy.com becuase it was on sale for a very good price. Overall it's very lightweight and runs cool and quiet. Data transfer is good in both directions with no hesitations. There's a fairly bright activity light that stays on while connected and idle and flickers while working. (The light might be annoying in a darkened room but could easily be covered with a bit of electrical tape.) It's footprint is very small and it's easy to slip into a briefcase. I had to quickly format this drive using the Mac's Disk Utilities program since it's initially formatted for Windows but other than that, no problems. NOTE: For anyone intending to remove the drive from the case and use it as an internal drive in a Mac, this particular drive won't work for reasons posted elsewhere on the Internet. However as an external hard drive it performs quite well.

Works great – NO complaints! Great value and easy to use – Plug it in and it's ready to rock. Initial sync may take awhile depending on the size of your data pool but it's all right there.

5 of 5 Just as Promised Saturday, April 11, 2009
    Robert from Emeryville, CA
I plugged it in and it worked as promised. I am completely satisfied with this product. I have a 10" netbook with no DVD drive so I use it to transfer large files such as music, photos, and home movies. I keep buying western digital external portable hard drives because they keep increasing the storage size and Buy.com keeps offering great bargains. I think I paid less for this 320GB than I did for my first one, a 60GB.

5 of 5 Backup the Laptop Saturday, February 14, 2009
    Garry from Ottawa, KS
For the price of this item and the ease with which you can backup the contents of a laptop hard drive or even data files from a PC, the WDME3200TN is simply hard to beat. Plug it in, let Windows recognize it, and then either use the software on the drive or Windows to copy files. No bulky transformer or additional cords other than the USB cable. There were no errors on a 162GB transfer from a Sony laptop and even though it's not the fastest drive available, it did exactly what it was supposed to do with a minimum of effort. To have this available for under $100 makes it irresistable.

    4 of 5 WD 320GB USB 2.0 portable HD Monday, February 09, 2009
A Customer from Santa Fe, NM
This worked right out of the package with my MacBook. I bought it for TIme Machine backups of my computer and I plugged it in and TIme Machine opened immediately and asked if I wanted to use the WD hard drive for backups, I hit yes and as I recall, the initial copying was about a hour. No mess no fuss. At 320GB, I should be able to store a lot of backups. My only complaint is the plastic casing which scratches easily, but looks are not a big concern for me as long as it works. I'll be taking it to Asia with me to keep my backups timely. Small, light, does what it is supposed to, and was a great price.

I purchased this product for my boss from another vendor and he can't live without it. When I had seen it on Buy.com for only $79.99 I purchased one immediately for myself. I deleted all the software that is preloaded on the drive since I prefer not to use it. I am very satisfied with the purchase.

    5 of 5 I would recomend Wednesday, January 07, 2009
    Abbas from Auburn Hills, Michigan
Its my first external hard drive so I want to go for the best one. And Western Digital are the pioners in this field. To the expectation it lived and I am completly satisfied. The only issue i had is the SYNC software which they provide with it. I didnt find much usefull and formated the whole drive before I started using.

5 of 5 Very good for the price Monday, January 05, 2009
Carlos Alfaro from Rockaway Beach, NY
As with most hardware it work perfect out of the box. If you intend to use it to store large files you MUST format this NTFS. It comes with FAT32 by default. It was a backup for a windows machine (hence NTFS) but my ubuntu box is able to read the NTFS drive and even write to it with no problems. It is quiet. The little light which displays activity on the disk is not in the best place. Normally you would face the front of the drive and not the back (where the light is) is light (ok) and it looks good (glossy = lots of finger prints). ok software, but I use my own. I recommend (if you have a seagate drive in ur pc) to download the disk wizard to create an image and save it to this WS drive, OR driveimage xml is free and will do it on any brand drive. Comodo backup is a decent backup tool and it has been a good combination for me (cus I am used to it and know it well). You can use the software there but you have to learn it. Hope this helps. I wish it had more vents to cool the drive (not that it gets too hot but any little bit helps) it is a plus that is 3 years warranty (some competitors offer 5) but it would be nicer if it was 5.

5 of 5 Excellent portable drive Friday, January 02, 2009
    A Customer from Carrollon, Texas
I have been using it for a few weeks now and have no problem with it. It is small enough that I take it everywhere along with my laptop. USB only, no eSATA connection but that's ok since eSATA would required external power. The drive is 320GB capacity just like it stated. There is about 20GB with of preloaded software on it though (I just removed them). The only complain I have is that it came FAT32 pre-formatted. This creates problem when you store file over 4GB like DVD image. Once I converted it to NTFS, everything is fine. Overall, I am quite satisfied with it.

5 of 5 Simple, Portable, Usable Friday, January 02, 2009
    Mike from Philadelphia Area.
This is my 2nd Passport HD. This one is for my little sister (20yrs old) and she needed something to back her Music, schoolwork, and photos onto. I use my passport for both backing up work and personal files. They aren't the fastest but are definately faster than any flash based alternative. They use only 1 USB port for both POWER and Data Transfer just like a flash drive (usb stick, thumbdrive etc). Highly recommend them if you need something to keep a backup and even want to put into a small fireproof safe. They barely take up more than 2 deck of playing cards side by side. Just about the same thickness as well.

5 of 5 WD portable drives among the best Thursday, January 01, 2009
    A Customer from Corvallis Oregon
For work purposes I have been using 2.5" portable drives for 5 years. At first it was do-it-yourself, buying the drives and the enclosures separately, with many problems with usability due to driver incompatibilities on various Operating Systems. Between the various brands (LaCie, OTW, generic) that I have used in the last 3 years, the WD stands out for price, reliability and ease-of-use. I have never had a WD drive NOT connect to a system, whether it was Mac, Windows or Linux, and I have never lost data on a WD drive. The USB chipsets seem to be reliable and the ease of use is second to none.

    5 of 5 320 GB on a small portable drive Wednesday, December 31, 2008
    Rick from Seattle
Great Product! Just plug it into a USB port and go. Works on both my laptop and desktop. Pros: Bought it to backup my laptop. My desktop (homebuilt) has mustiple resourses to do this. Quick to setup, easy to use, easy to carry. Cons: 320 GB. Reformatted it to NTFS (was FAT32, which while portable, is error prone). On a USB. It litteraly takes hours to do any large transfers. I'm rebuilding my laptop and pulled the drives and connected them to my desktop. Transfer times for these drives (100 GB and 250 GB) were an order of magnitude faster. But - I bought it for the convience to start and walk away - which it does great.

4 of 5 Good value for the price but... Wednesday, December 31, 2008
    Anurag from Meriden, CT
Good value for the price but I'm picky about colors and looks so would have liked another color than just plain black. Found different color options for the same price at newegg's website (newegg.com). I don't think it's too heavy and one good surprise was the bright LED "busy/working" light. Remember that "Portable" is different than "External". External doesn't necessarily have the shock-proof casing.

    5 of 5 Good product Monday, December 29, 2008
    Trush from West Des Moines.
I replaced my bigger hard disk with this tiny one and it is really good as it consumes less space on my computer table and its good i got rid off my power cables from my old one as this one runs by usb drive. Though it has only 298GB instead of advertised 320 i won't mind that too much. I would recommend it.

Replaced my aging 4GB flash drive. Much more portable than my WD 1TB External- don't need to lug around an AC adapter. It's about the size of my wallet, so I just throw it in my other back pocket for total symmetry! Awesome!

It has to be shutdown via the "remove hardware" icon instead of simply disconnecting the USB connection because it has no on/off switch. This takes a few more seconds to turn off the drive, but the minimalism of the item is worth the extra exiting efforts. Buy.com shipping was fast as always and the price was excellent. Highly recommended in all.
