This appeared to be a great solution for a network storage drive on our gigabit network. I installed it and found that it reads and writes at a rate of 20-30mbs. This is MUCH slower than a USB 2.0 drive. The concept is great the performance is totally unacceptable. It should not be marketed as a gigabit solution. Look at the WDC forums (as I should have) for similar complaints. Was this review helpful?

This is an excellent Network drive. The only complaint I have is the speed. I usually only get about 4 mbs with this. From other drives that I have looked at this seems to be the norm. The software did not see the drive on the network but I was able to set the drive up thru the browser. Setting up folders were easy. Kids love it, they can save their homework onto it and not loose it when they need to reimage. Was this review helpful?

This could be an excellent drive. Huge storage, gig NIC, small attractive case.
The included software and documentation is specific *only* to creating a western digital online account (which costs a monthly fee) and attaching the file share to that. I just want a network file share! I had to setup a DHCP server so I could check the IP address assigned to it, browse to it, find the default password on the internet somewhere (because it wasn't in the documentation - you're only supposed to use *their* software, not a browser), and configure it with that.
Once configured, which took about three hours of cursing for me, it has been running great. Performance is on par with decent NAS drives. I can have multiple computers talking to it all sustaining decent throughput for a gigabit network. I can create multiple users and shares and setup permissions for each. But the documentation and included software is so horrible that I wouldn't buy another. I'd spend the extra money for a Buffalo that I can really manage, and has much higher performance with a four-drive stripe. Was this review helpful?
