4 of 5 Good Drive, poor software Wednesday, January 07, 2009 Dave from Lima, OHIO
This drive shines in the area of size and convenience (uses a single cable) not speed. It took several hours to backup my 250gb drive with less than 100gb of data.
I purchased mine to do monthly backups of my desktop hard drive running Vista. I was disapointed to find out the software included is intended for Syncing files and reccomends strongly against using it for backup. I also had to reformat to NTFS.
My version of Vista has a backup utility built in and I am trying it now. It doesn't seem as powerfull as Ghost but is way better than previous windows backup/restore.

4 of 5 Western Digital My Passport Essential Hard Drive Saturday, December 06, 2008 Terry Wright from Ottumwa, Iowa
The only complaint I have it that drive has caused boot up problems. I am running Vista 64-bit so this may be part of it. Overall the drive is fast, works well for backup and is small sized, so it does not take up a lot of room. Was this review helpful?

Can't beat the value for the price. Fast, cool, dependable. Only downside is necessity to reformat to NTFS. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Product for a cheap price Tuesday, September 23, 2008 W from Milwaukee, WI
Quick and Easy plug and play USB external hard drive. I avoided the sync software because I was not planning to use it for backup services. I use it for transfer of files from one computer to another and it works great. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good buy, a couple negatives Thursday, September 11, 2008 Robert from Vienna, VA
I really bought this to back up my mp3 and video collection so I can take them off my computer to free up some space. The software that comes with the drive does not do this. You need to do a manual copy over. Also, the physical drive of the size it self was a little bigger and heavier than I expected. I definitely added weight to my computer bar. Other than that, it looks slick and is reliable. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great product Monday, September 08, 2008 EEE from Simpsonville, SC
This is my second WD Passport. They are extremely portable, sleek, and quiet. Great deal on this one through Techbargains.com. If using a Mac, use Disk Utility to re-format the drive to Mac OS Extended format- works like a charm. Was this review helpful?

It works fine for me. My computer ALWAYS recognizes the drive and I don't mind the "extra" USB cord. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 Do know how to use Sunday, September 07, 2008 Sarah from Elgin, IL
The product itself was good, the price was good. However I was disappointed on the instuctions that were provided. I have read them a few times and still wasn't sure what to do. I had to get a family member to help me. Was this review helpful?

The drive is nicely designed, works well and is easy to carry and install. A bit slow but that is common for USB powered drives.
The software, however, is a poor cousin to real sync programs. The interface is poorly designed and not very intuitive. But the big problem is that the software cannot sync more than 40 GB under a single profile.
In other words, you buy a 250 GB drive with software that is advertised as offering encryption and automatic synchronization but you must divide your data into 40 GB segments and give each a unique name by defining a separate profile for that 40 GB of data.
I looked but did not find documentation for this limitation and learned of it only after a long telephone call to WD tech support to complain that when I tried to sync about 90GB the program just looped forever. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 Bad News, stay away Wednesday, August 20, 2008 A Customer from SF Bay Area
Bought one of these to use for all of my music files. Wanted to keep the music seperate from the main hard drive. First this uses a USB cable for power, so power fluctuates this is a bad thing when you are trying to listen to a song, which I found out the first time I ran the Media Player against any song file on this thing, songs would play like playing on an old turntable, it would slow down, then speed up, then stop.
Computer sometimes does not see this hard drive, and have to restart computer for it to be seen.
Read/Write very slow considering once again it gets it's power thru the USB cable & it is using the same cable for data transfer, things run slow & stop from time to time.
Found the performace totally unacceptable and would not recommend it to my worst enemy, if you are going to get an external drive, get one with a separate plug in power source for starters... Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Portable USB drives need to be more functionally d Monday, August 18, 2008 Narayanachar Murali from Orangeburg, SC , USA
These are great quality drives and work beautifully. they are very pretty and compact. Some points that can make it useful to someone like me
1) The idea of having a separate cable to carry around is absurd. I wish the STANDARD ( Not mini USB) cable is built right into the case of the external hard drive like passsport with a 3- 6 inch umbilicus to allow easy plug in into standard USB ports.
2) It is almost criminal to sell unsecured drives in today's market. In the future I would like to see the passport drives with a boot level security. No one should be able to unencrypt or explore the drive if the password is lost. I would gladly pay $50 more for a highly secure drive. Was this review helpful?
