| | | From the creator of A Nightmare On Elm Street... This time staying awake won't save you. Features: DVD When director Wes Craven (playing himself) begins writing a new script for a new Nightmare movie, actress Heather Langenkamp (also playing herself) faces a series of horrific events: Her husband is killed in a car accident, she is terrorized by a mysterious phone caller, and her young son (Miko Hughes) begins acting strangely. She soon realizes that the real Freddy (Robert Englund) is behind the incidents. Freddy may be dead in reel life, but not in real life, according to this unusual entry in the terror series. Craven gets downright philosophical here, having actors play themselves and commenting on the effect horror and violence have on audiences. There's no shortage of gore, but the accent here is on creepy atmospherics and the "what if?" premise. "It's the cleverest, wittiest, most twisted scarefest in ages!" Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "The best horror film in years!" Andy Klein, L.A. Reader "Wes Craven returns to his now classic horror premise and takes it to a new dimension." Janet Maslin, New York Times
 Editor's Note
Freddy's back, only this time he's not confined to dreams in this macabre film within a film. Heather Langenkamp, star of the original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, along with other actors and director Craven all appear as themselves. When Heather's husband is mysteriously killed her son begins to have disturbing nightmares, culminating in a bizarre encounter with the fictional boogeyman. As self-referential as Craven's SCREAM movies, but much more serious and creepy. Some scenes shot on location near the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
 Plot Summary
Actress Heather Langenkamp, who starred in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, now married with a son, is offered a new role in Wes Craven's newest "Nightmare." The film describes Freddy Krueger as an ancient evil, who must be barred between the walls of a story -- or else he will haunt reality. Since the story remains unfinished, Freddy's back and out for blood, especially Heather's. With her husband dead and her son hospitalized, she must brave the underworld to defeat the evil and, in doing so, bring the story to a close.
