Notes & Personnel Info | | Performers include: Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins, Phineas Newborn, Jr., Art Tatum. | | A three-disc box set, the Jazz Bistro Weekend Collection is a surprisingly balanced and varied collection of jazz artifacts, ranging from a creaky (but affecting) "Georgia on My Mind" performed by its composer, Hoagy Carmichael, through an elegant version of Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight" by Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock. Other highlights here include Coleman Hawkins' tough but romantic version of "April in Paris" and Red Norvo's "Just a Mood," with Ben Webster on tenor sax. The real delight, though, is the third disc, which is themed around the piano and features tracks by some of the greatest piano players in jazz, including Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, and Lennie Tristano. This isn't an exhaustive history of jazz or anything, but the variety and quality of the tracks selected makes it a nice purchase, and the piano disc in particular is a nice surprise. ~ Steve Leggett |
