Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Personnel: Gene Ammons (tenor saxophone); Sonny Stitt (alto & tenor saxophones); John Houston (piano); Buster Williams (bass); George Brown (drums).
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois on August 26, 1961. Originally released on Prestige (7606). Includes liner notes by Mark Gardner.
Digital remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Tenor saxophonists Ammons and Stitt first played together in Billy Eckstine's band in the '40s. The two musicians went their separate ways but frequently worked together throughout the '50s and into the '60s. This set was recorded in the summer of 1961, a year before Ammons began serving a lengthy prison sentence for a narcotics conviction. During Ammons' long absence in the '60s, the Prestige label continued to release new works they had stockpiled. WE'LL BE TOGETHER AGAIN was one such releases, with the title making reference to Ammons' pending release.
Ammons and Stitt have an easy confidence that allows them to swing with gentle vigor or emote deeply on slow ballads. George & Ira Gershwin's "But Not For Me" is a showcases the former, while the standard "Autumn Leaves" is a fine example of the latter. A trio of pianist John Houston, bassist Buster Williams, and drummer George Brown accompanies the two saxophonists. The album finds both Ammons and Stitt in fine form and is highly recommended.
