 Plot Summary
The future has arrived, and it brings a world composed entirely of water, due to the melting of the polar ice caps. In this desperate society one must distill one's own urine for drinking water, and land is only a myth people dream of. Roaming the high seas is the Mariner, a surly, selfish man/fish mutant with no name. But his loner existence changes when a woman named Helen and an orphaned girl named Enola save his life, and the Mariner reluctantly agrees to take them along with him. At first the Mariner has a rocky relationship with his two passengers; then he realizes that the tattoo on Enola's back is a map leading to the never-seen "Dryland". But as the trio struggles to decipher the map, they must also try to escape a band of filthy, reckless thugs known as "Smokers", led by the maniacal, one-eyed Deacon. Then the Smokers kidnap Enola, turning the Mariner into a one-man killing machine desperate to rescue his human map.| And only if he succeeds will they ever know the feel of solid ground beneath their feet.

5 of 5 Great movie!!! Saturday, April 26, 2003 A Viewer from miami, fl
The biggest mistake that the so called critics made when they reviewed this movie was to try to understand Waterworld. You just don't do that with this movie; this is a scifi/fantasy movie; what you really must do when seeing it is to enjoy the adventure, the characters, the action, the music, the humor, the story. 5 of 5 Great DTS Sound Wednesday, February 23, 2000 A Viewer from San Antonio
If you have DTS, want to add a movie to challenge your Home Theatre sound system, and might find a sea-based 'Mad Max - Beyond Thunderdome' entertaining, GO FOR THIS. This movie really shows the outstanding quality of DTS sound. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 pure sci fi Thursday, July 29, 1999 todd.lewis from san jose ca
WaterWorld is science fiction at it's best, and I think that anyone that went to see this movie and bashed it, didn't see the same movie that I did. The premise of the story was pretty original with the tattoo on the little girl being a map to the mythical dryland. People existing on water with out actually being able to drink it. Dennis Hopper was excellent as the egomaniacle bad guy looking for dryland, 'so he could probably corrupt it as well'. Costner being amphibious, and the way he fishes for food was really unique. Cool vehicles and floating cities. This is just a good old fashioned, post apocalyptic Road Warrior on the water type of sci fi action flick. After all dont we attend movies for entertainment, to suspend reality for a couple of hours, and forget the real world! I think people forget that none of this is real and that it is strictly for entertainment value. So loosen up and go along for the ride. Was this review helpful?
