"...at least as energetic as the fourth Die Hard movie and better paced and more exciting than Transformers."  James Berardinelli's ReelViews
"...a complicated plot, but one that leaves plenty of room for everything a fan could want..."  Ken Fox, TV Guide

Editor's Note

Set in San Francisco amidst a feud between the Japanese yakuza and Chinese Triad criminal factions, director Philip G. Atwell's WAR stars Jet Li as the enigmatic assassin Rogue, and Jason Statham as Jack Crawford, an F.B.I. agent determined to track him down. As the prime suspect in the murder of Crawford's partner, the elusive Rogue uses the mayhem of gang warfare to his advantage, even as the gruff lawman closes in on his trail, leading to a dramatic showdown.

Although Li and Statham have shared the screen before in THE ONE, this is the first film to give the two stars equal billing. While Li has little to say in the movie, his actions speak volumes; he plays Rogue with a sleek menace that contrasts nicely with Statham's gruff, no-nonsense presence. WAR is the debut studio film from hip-hop-video director Philip G. Atwell (best known for his work with Eminem and 50 Cent). It moves at a brisk, quick-cut pace, and benefits from fight choreography by veteran Chinese actor/director Corey Yuen. Though martial-arts fans may be slightly disappointed by the movie's focus on gunplay, one of its centerpieces, a furious swordfight that showcases Li's stunning dexterity, is sure to please aficionados of Hong Kong-style kinetics.

War - DVD Review

The problem with being a connoisseur of B-grade action movies is that eventually you start applying the kind of elevated expectations that this genre is supposed to guard against. You get so accustomed to, say, a late-summer Jason Statham movie providing more thrills than many of its big-budget counterparts that suddenly Statham and Jet Li costarring in a chintzy action picture becomes a victim of perhaps unreasonable expectations. That pairing of B-movie titans, somewhat inexplicably titled War, is neither a team-up nor a battle royale; it's actually kind of like a low-budget Heat knockoff, with a far larger cast and a far snakier plot than is warranted by the stars' specific and unpretentious skill sets....read the full review

It's been nearly four decades since Edwin Starr had his big AM radio hit, but when it comes to the new Jason Statham/Jet Li mash up, he said it best when he sang, "War, good God y'all, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!" By turns brutal, banal, and laughingly ridiculous, this pointless action thriller boasts a fine cast, but gives them absolutely nothing worthy to do. If this movie were a human being, some doctor would be pulling the plug, because it is certainly brain dead...It is ludicrous and not everyone in the cast seems to be in the same movie. Devon Aoki, as Triad first daughter Kira, treats it as a comedy, offering a completely deadpan performance. She might have gotten the idea from one scene she has where she threatens the lives of two of her father's lieutenants while simultaneously asking them to go out and get her a salad. But the approach works. When she is on screen, at least the movie is honestly funny. The rest of it purely unintentional and eventually it all grows too weary. There is a lot of talent in front of the camera in this mess--Statham, Li, Lone, Aoki, Luis Guzman, Saul Rubinek, and the always cool Sung Kang--and they are all wasted. Those actors deserve a better movie. So does the audience. - Pam Grady
