| Album Notes and Credits |
Notes & Personnel Info | | About as fun and interesting an album as one could hope for considering the overall subject matter of the project (War Child is a charitable organization that provides relief to children suffering in conflict stricken regions around the globe), WAR CHILD PRESENTS HEROES pairs rock icons with current artists covering classic songs from the former's catalogs. The results are an understandably mixed bag, yet consistently enjoyable. The Scissor Sisters' clubby synth-pop take on Roxy Music's "Do the Strand" is utterly delightful; the Hold Steady tackle Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City" with a subtlety not often associated with them; the Yeah Yeah Yeahs offer an appropriately giddy take on "Sheena is a Punk Rocker"; and TV on the Radio deliver perhaps the most radical and inspired reworking of the set with its version of Bowie's title anthem. An interesting concept done for an undeniably good cause, WAR CHILD PRESENTS HEROES has much to appreciate on numerous levels. | | War Child Presents Heroes isn't a typical benefit album. Compilations filled with covers are nothing new, of course, but in this case, marquee artists were asked to handpick younger artists to cover them, in addition to choosing the songs to be covered. Some of the match-ups -- the Hold Steady on Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City," the Kooks on the Kinks' "Victoria" -- are too natural to produce anything but easily predictable and faithful results. In several other cases, the contributors could have just as easily made the cover choices on their own -- Franz Ferdinand doing Blondie's "Call Me" is no stretch; ditto Peaches' taking on Iggy & the Stooges' "Search and Destroy" -- so it's not as if there are any truly off-the-wall pairings. The highlights tend to come from those who sound as if they're truly having fun, most evident on Beck's "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" (Bob Dylan), which packs an irresistible, fuzzy punch. ~ Andy Kellman | Musical Guests | | Mick Jones |

| Professional Reviews |
| Rolling Stone (p.73) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Beck bounces through Dylan's 'Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat' with blazing distortion, while Peaches strips the Stooges' 'Search and Destroy' down to sexy bass and krautrock beats."Mojo (Publisher) (p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Hot Chip, Peaches, TV On The Radio and Elbow all go that extra mile to create something new, unique and often quite wonderful." Pitchfork (Website) - "Duffy transforms Wings' 'Live and Let Die' into a smoky soul number about the curdling of youthful idealism, opting for seductive rather than ominous or threatening." Clash (magazine) (p.99) - "Some play it relatively straight, while others breathe fresh life into the classic. A fun listen with some great result for an excellent -- and very worthy -- cause." |
