The town of Blaine, Missouri is preparing for celebrations of its 150th anniversary. Corky St.Clair, an off-off-off-off-off-Broadway director, is putting together an amateur theater show about the town's history, starring a local dentist, a couple of travel agents, a Dairy Queen waitress, and a car repairman. He invites a Broadway producer's agent, Mr. Guffman, to see the opening night of the show, and a favorable word by Guffman could bring the production to New York! Waiting For Guffman writer/actor/director Christopher Guest has put together a fabulously funny DVD experience, including wildly improvised scenes never seen anywhere else and a commentary track that will have you falling on the floor.

"...a sly and gleeful comedy showcase."  Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
"...many laugh-out-loud moments and characterizations."  Christine James, Boxoffice Magazine
"...outrageously funny."  Rolling Stone
"...nonstop amusing mockumentary...the perfect cast."  Susan Wloszczyna, USA Today

Editor's Note

The star-struck denizens of backwater burg Blaine, Missouri, gear up for their chance in the limelight when their community theatre impresario promises them that talent scout Mort Guffman will attend the opening of their sesquicentennial gala, a musical revue called "Red, White, and Blaine." A charming "mockumentary" co-scripted and directed by that genre's unofficial kingpin, Christopher Guest (of THIS IS SPINAL TAP fame).

Plot Summary

This mock documentary, set in the fictional town of Blaine, Missouri, chronicles the attempts of its talent-free residents to put on a show celebrating the burg's 150th anniversary. From the fey director Corky St. Clair to the Dairy Queen girl, the cast and crew scream incompetence. Furthermore, St. Claire has invited Guffman -- a Broadway producer -- to see the production, with the hopes that they will eventually make it to the Great White Way. Can the local yokels make something out of nothing?

5 of 5 STOP WAITING FOR GUFFMAN AND BUY IT! Monday, September 16, 2002
The B Man from Plainview, NY

Not only is this one of the funniest movies I have ever seen (and it is) it is one of the most heartfelt and touching stories as well. Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy plant you in the outlandish town of Blaine right in the middle of a 150 anniversary. Everyone in the town is excited for the big show that will be presented directed by Corky St. Claire (Guest). Thus the comic mishaps ensue. The best thing about this film is that it is entirely improvised! That's right, no scripts at all! A definite cult classic, Waiting for Guffman is for theater-goers and their friends. Plus, who can resist such lines as, "I hate you and I hate your ass face!"

5 of 5 the funniest little mockumentary Tuesday, August 20, 2002
Elizabeth from Austin, TX
I am a fan of the mockumentary genre, and I try to see as many as possible. This is one of the best I've seen, and certainly the funniest. I don't want to offend any Spinal Tap fans, but I think this movie is much funnier. Behind this film is the comic genius of Christopher Guest (the six-fingered man from "The Princess Bride") who directs the film, plays Corky St. Clair, and co-wrote the music for the film with Michael McKean and Harry Shearer. The little town of Blaine, Missouri is putting on a musical to celebrate their sesquicentennial. This celebratory musical for the "Stool Capitol of the World" will be directed by Corky St. Clair, the only citizen of Blaine to have any Broadway experience. Along with some other quirky citizens, played by Eugene Levy (who co-wrote the movie), Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Bob Balaban and more, he puts on a show you have to see to believe. I have seen this movie at least 4 times and every time I notice something hilarious and new. It is worth buying on DVD for the deleted scenes; the "Bulging River" number is a hoot! For any fan of mockumentary, this is a must-have.
