| | "I am always looking for words that have some sort of energy. Usually the name just comes, from a magazine or somebody says something. I had waited for years while working on the album but it didn't come. In the lyrics there are words like "voltage" and "voodoo", which I found to be too common somehow. I have always tried to choose titles which are kind of latin or something, which aren't English, which is a little funny because we Europeans find latin to be sort of neutral language. But I found Volta. I don't recall how it came about, but I Googled it and found that it is both the name of a scientist in Italy who invented the battery, and also a river in Africa which had been built by men, and a lagoon built by men called Lake Volta. So several parts come into it. I'm not going to name anything specific, people can guess for themselves what it is. There is also a medieval dance which carries that name, a very funny dance which is very hard to learn. Thusly, I got a lot of things in one word: a dance, a river in Africa which doesn't work anymore, and the battery. So okay - this fits." --Bjork Track Listing 1. Earth Intruders 2. Wanderlust 3. Hartford Courant "...a strong album with memorable, remarkable tracks that have great variety..." Sputnikmusic "...Bjork's best album yet." Tiny Mix Tapes
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Recording information: Manhattan Center Studios, NYC (2007). | | Bjork has always been one to follow her muse, and after 2004's MEDULLA, a foray into the sonic avant garde, one had to wonder if she would continue following it straight into the abstract outer limits. But 2007's VOLTA marks something of a return to pop form for Bjork. Not to say that the album is conventional by any stretch--it's still Bjork, after all--but there is greater evidence of her pop sensibility than on any album since 1997's HOMOGENIC. | | The album's first single, "Earth Intruders," is a case in point. An exhilarating tribal stomp boasting production by Timbaland and clanking orchestration from the Congolese ensemble Konono No. 1, the track is a stunning opening salvo. VOLTA offers other moments of hip-shaking thunder ("Innocence"), alongside more melodic, contemplative fare such as "Wanderlust" and "The Dull Flame of Desire," which features the gorgeous voice of Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons. Varied, engaging, and wildly imaginative front to back, VOLTA is another remarkable release from one of pop's reigning geniuses. | Producer: Bjork; Mark Bell | Engineer: Jonathan Tams; Alex Dromgoole; David Emery; Daniel Morrison | | |

Spin (p.90) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[W]hether she's orchestrating a B-movie death march or a seaside fantasia, her vision is worth the price of submission."The Wire (p.52) - "[An] excellent album....She is clearly controlling and shaping the direction of these tracks, forging something foreign and idiosyncratic but without a hint of kookiness." The Wire (p.35) - Included in The Wire's "50 Records of the Year 2007". Vibe (p.70) - "With grace and gumption, she creates a dazzling sonic cosmos all her own." Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.52) - "VOLTA is a collection of frequently unexpected and mostly quite enjoyable sounds. Take it as a contiguous work, unique and worthy of repeated listening..." Q (Magazine) (p.82) - Ranked #19 in Q's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2007" -- "[Her] most vibrant album in 10 years." Stylus Magazine 9 of 10 Bjork doesn't really write songs anymore. You're not going to drive to work with "Hope" as your gas-foot. You're never going to remember the tune behind "Pneumonia" or "I See Who You Are," but splinters of their wistful timbre may stick anyway--the former's Bering Sea horn intro, on repeat as you floss your teeth 'cause it's so damn bedtime, or the latter's ether moodsway. Of course, there are fans of both Debut and Post who lost the song and have since given up on Bjork. And then there are fans of Homogenic and Vespertine who never got with Medulla's vocal playgrounding...For me, her best records (the last three) are the sort you only remember when you're still inside them--once they've gone quiet, it's hard to recall just why you felt so limp and vulnerable a moment before. She's melodic now like Alice Coltrane was melodic--laying down the distracted warmth of FEEL and then mining that supple headspace until she tires of it.
