It is simply and purely a sampler from the first 19 issues of Verve's Jazz Masters series; in other words, a sampler of a sampler. There is some clever segueing; the opening track, Louis Armstrong's "Just One of Those Things" with Oscar Peterson, leads right into Peterson in all his high-speed fury with his trio in "Woody 'n' You." There are some predictable choices -- the 328th reissue of Wes Montgomery's "Impressions," or the 1, 243rd reissue of Getz/Gilberto/Jobim's "The Girl From Ipanema" -- and as befitting the composition of the Verve archives, there is heavy emphasis (five out of 16 tracks) upon female singers. But the stylistic range is reasonably wide, or as reasonable as these archives would allow, even to the point of including an electric track, Chick Corea's "Captain Marvel" from 1972, and thanks to a bit of doubling or tripling up, every artist from the first 19 volumes except Stephane Grappelli is represented. Eventually, the Jazz Masters would come to its conclusion after 60 volumes, the last of which is yet another sampler. For jazz newcomers only, or impulse buyers who want a token jazz CD on their shelf. ~ Richard S. Ginell |
