| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Compilation producers: Craig Balsam, Cliff Chenfeld. | | At first glance, Razor & Tie's Monsters of Rock, Vol. 2 appears to focus primarily on hard rock and pop-metal from the '80s, but upon closer inspection, it also contains a fair share of more mainstream AOR and pop/rock hits, including Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart," Cutting Crew's "(I Just) Died in Your Arms," the Outfield's "Your Love," Scandal's "The Warrior," and Asia's "Heat of the Moment." These tracks have the effect of toning down the hard-rock flavor, so headbangers might want to look elsewhere, but they also bring out the pop savvy of tunes like Slaughter's "Fly to the Angels," Nelson's "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection," White Lion's "When the Children Cry," Vixen's "Edge of a Broken Heart," Trixter's "Give It to Me Good," Britny Fox's "Girlschool," and Enuff Z'Nuff's "Fly High Michelle." As a sampler of mainstream rock and hard rock in the '80s, Monsters of Rock, Vol. 2 presents a pretty balanced portrait. ~ Steve Huey | | The infamous era of denim and leather makes a triumphant return with MONSTERS OF ROCK VOL. 2. Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum fell back from the Vinnie Vincent invasion to forge out on their own and steal the show with "Fly to the Angels." Supergroup Asia was MTV's "Heat of the Moment" as the group brought progressive rock to mainstream audiences. Ricky Nelson's twin sons that led the band of their namesake deliver irresistible soft-rock harmonies in "Love and Affection (Can't Live Without Your Love)." Art-rock pioneers Yes had their first taste of worldwide commercial fame as "Owner of a Lonely Heart" dominated album-oriented rock radio stations. The Outfield's Tony Lewis hit a home run with McCartneyish charm and a soaring tenor voice in "Your Love." | | Vixen and Scandal took cues from bands like Heart, showing that women can rock just as hard with "Edge of a Broken Heart" and "The Warrior." Underrated rock legend Joe Lynn Turner took his turn at the helm of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow with "Stone Cold." MONSTERS OF ROCK VOL. 2 highlights some of rock music's finer moments from the '80s and '90s, making it a must-have collection for aficionados of the era. |
