Since the release of their first album in 1969, Genesis has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. Over the past 30 years, they have proven to be one of the most resilient and powerful units in modern music, enjoying extraordinary popularity while continually exploring new musical avenues. GENESIS ARCHIVE #2 - 1976-1992 gathers together a bounty of odds-and-sods from the band's post-Peter Gabriel era, when drummer Phil Collins took over the lead vocal spot. The eagerly awaited 3-CD set includes: 16 rare studio recordings which were not included on any of the band's studio albums; 13 live songs that have never appeared on any of Genesis' in-concert releases; special 12" mixes of four Genesis classics -- "Invisible Touch," "Land of Confusion," "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" & "I Can't Dance"; and a work-in-progress early version of "Mama," offering a rare glimpse into the group's studio process. Also included is a 64-page booklet featuring extensive liner notes, photos, and a forward by Genesis co-founder/keyboardist Tony Banks. GENESIS ARCHIVE #2 stands as a fitting conclusion to the hugely successful second chapter of the Book of Genesis.

This three CD follow-up collects rarities--studio outtakes, B-sides, remixes, and previously unreleased live tracks--from what the band refers to in the liner notes as their "20 year experiment" with Phil Collins as lead singer (1975-95). | | Most of the songs lean toward the band's pop-soul side, although there's a work-in-progress version of "Mama" that (due to its obviously unfinished quality) hints at their earlier, more abstract style. Other highlights include the amusingly titled "Do the Neurotic," which has a great electric 12-string riff and a chugging synth chorus, and an interesting, dance-oriented remix of "Invisible Touch," whose big drum sound is redolent of late '80s pop. |
