Of all the compilations that have been released in this series, NOW 12 is the volume with the most heavily saturated R&B and hip-hop track listing. Of the rock bands included, all were relatively new upon time of release, including nu-metal newbies Chevelle (a grinding "The Red") and Saliva (the melodramatic "Always"), and post-grungers 3 Doors Down (a blues-rock flavored "When I'm Gone"). Piano-playing chanteuse Vanessa Carlton is represented by the sweet ballad "Pretty Baby" and country music even gets a nod by way of Keith Urban's infectious twangfest "Somebody Like You," but otherwise the remaining 15 cuts are predominantly about beats and rhymes.
Nelly adds his own update to Run-DMC's "My Adidas" with "Air Force Ones," old-school meets new-school on LL Cool J's Neptunes-penned "Luv You Better," and Jay-Z joins forces with rumored gal-pal and Destiny's Child mouthpiece Beyonce Knowles on the caper-themed "'03 Bonnie & Clyde." The N Sync arms race gets also gets a forum with the thumping "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)" versus Justin Timberlake's brisk Neptunes collaboration "Like I Love You." Divas also reign supreme with Knowles bandmate Kelly Rowland soaring solo with the ballad "Stole" and Jennifer Lopez attempting modesty with "Jenny From the Block."
