| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Bringing It All Back Home, Vol. 1 is the first of three volumes of Irish and Irish-related music "produced in conjunction with a BBC television documentary of the same name, " as the sleeve note puts it, but not billed as a soundtrack. "The Influence of Irish Music, " reads an album cover subtitle, and that provides a key to the contents, which combine traditional and original Irish music played by Irish artists such as Hothouse Flowers, De Danann, and the Clancy Brothers with songs in the Irish tradition but sometimes performed by international artists, such as Richard Thompson ("The Dimming of the Day") and the Everly Brothers ("Rose Connolly"). The music is newly recorded for the most part, and the mixture gives a broad sense of the range of Irish music and its descendants. The dark side of the spread of the music, however, is the diaspora that helped bring it about, a subject touched upon in the song lyrics, especially Mick Moloney, Jimmy Keane, and Robbie O'Connell's performance of Peter Jones' "Kilkelly," an epistolary tale of emigration that virtually anyone of Irish descent won't be able to listen to without crying. Part of the attraction of Irish music, of course, is its appeal to the emotions, and that characteristic is present here in abundance. ~ William Ruhlmann | | This collection plucked from Philip King's five-part documentary series on the influence of Irish music is a rare find. While some Celtic folk collections can often be peculiarly monochromatic or mawkish affairs, this selection paves the way for others by looking beyond the horizon and eavesdropping on the long conversation Ireland has held with North America. | | Emigration is as Irish as the potato, and over the last century the musical resonances have been deafening. The Lee Valley String Band's "When First Into This Country" kicks up a storm of Appalachian hay, while in "Rose Connolly" the Everly Brothers weave their trademark harmonies around Uillean pipes, and Mary Black, Emmylou Harris, and Dolores Keane come together like old friends on "Sonny." However, this retrospective succeeds in giving us heart and soul where others might have opted for Irish mist. Paul Brady's tale of London rejection ("Nothing But the Same Old Story") packs a mighty punch in a new acoustic version, and in "Kilkelly," Mick Maloney paints the bleak picture of what emigration really meant for those left behind. If ploughing their lonely furrow across the ocean could reap so rich a harvest, then maybe it was worth it after all. | Producer: Donal Lunny | Engineer: Andrew Boland |
