This 20-track collection features numerous highlights from the big-band era, including "Frenesi" and "Stardust" by Artie Shaw; "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light" by Duke Ellington; "Pompton Turnpike" and "I Hear a Rhapsody" by Charlie Barnet; "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "Moonlight Cocktail," and "Pistol Packin' Mama" from Glenn Miller; and "There Are Such Things" and "Boogie Woogie" by Tommy Dorsey. The big-band singers and solo vocalists of the day are also represented with the inclusion of Frank Sinatra's "Night and Day," Lena Horne's "Stormy Weather," Vaughn Monroe's "There! I've Said It Again," and Dinah Shore's "Blues in the Night." But as always, America couldn't resist a great novelty song, and Spike Jones' "Cocktails for Two" and the King Sisters' "The Hut Sut Song" were as good as the decade had to give. Transfers are well done, and given the wartime restrictions on shellac (the compound used to make records back then), the sound is astonishingly clear. ~ Cub Koda | Producer: Leonard Joy; Chick Crumpacker (Compilation) |
