5 of 5 Truly a Great Radio. Tuesday, April 29, 2008 A Customer from Madison Heights, MI

Well-made and well-thought-out.
This table/clock radio has every feature I could want in a small package, especially sound. Clearly modeled after the Henry Kloss Model Satelite table radio, this HD Radio has all of the same features and more. I was thoroughly impressed with reception, sound quality, and the blue LCD display.

Radio: The FM tuner works wonderfully, and HD reception is very good, even on Ann Arbor public radio all the way in Madison Heights, MI (Detroit area).
[Attention Detroit area residents who miss WDET's eclectic music mix-it's back! Yes, WDET-FM 101.9 features a second HD broadcast with nothing but music, no announcements, no news, just music. This mix is great and having this service actually prompted me to support the pledge drive this year. If you live in Detroit and want to hear WDET's alternate channel, this is definately a good radio to buy.]

Here are my favorite features:
1. Adjustable Bass and Treble-A feature clearly missing from Henry Kloss audio is tone controls. Sometimes you just need to adjust them, especially if you listen to older recordings frequently.
2. Digital Tuning-obviously the only way to get HD broadcasts is with a digital tuner.
3. Dual Alarms with weekdays/weekends/everyday settings. Set your alarms up around your work schedule, never be later on Monday morning again. (The clock also features the date to accommodate this feature.) Each alarm features a customizable snooze time.
4. Aux input-perfect for iPod.
5. Mix input-This second Aux input is always active, which is perfect for computer audio. I can hear my computer sound events all the time, and if I want to use iTunes, just switch to Aux.
6. Line-Out connection-Nice to be able to share HD reception with other audio devices, such as a home stereo or powered speakers in the next room.
7. FM and AM external antennas allow you to place the radio where is looks and sounds best, and place the antennas out of the way for best reception.

Who would want this radio?
1. Music fans who want to listen to alternate channel broadcasts. (Even if you just use this with another stereo, still a bargain).
2. Office Users-especially with the computer sound input, this is handy in your office, and HD reception may give you better sound.
3. As a clock radio-I replaced a Bose Wave Radio with this Visteon HD Pulse radio and am thoroughly pleased. Sound is more natural than Bose and the alarms are more flexible.
4. Casual music fans may find this radio adequate for primary listening, and its small form factor means it doesn't dominate your living room/sunroom/etc.

Cons: I am picky so here are my negative feedbacks:
1. Display does not auto-dim (My Bose had user-settable night and day settings with an ambient light sensor), so because this is a clock radio, I keep backlight on the dimmest setting, which is still bright enough to see during the day.
2. Menu-driven: I prefer dedicated buttons for everything, but the menu is well-organized. There is a dedicated EQ button with takes you straight to the tone controls.
3. Only 5 FM presets. Would be nice if they had 6, or perhaps FM1 and FM2 like a car radio. But, I only listen to 4 stations so it doesn't matter to me.
4. The tuning knob: this works well, but it feels a little flimsy because the tuning knob is also a push-button for enter (make the menu system work more like an iPod). During normal listening, pushing the tuning know conveniently seeks the next higher station.
5. Sleep timer is customizable, but pressing sleep multiple times doesn't seem to add increments of sleep time. Plus, I miss the nap timer from my Bose. (The nap timer was like sleep in reverse, radio turned on after 20 minutes instead).

Overall, I absolutely love this radio, and everyone that has seen it has raved about the looks and sound. Was this review helpful?
