 Editor's Note
Combining romance, gothic horror, science fiction, and bloody action into a dazzling anime production, VAMPIRE HUNTER D (2000) takes the vampire mythos to a new level. This movie is not a remake or a continuation of the 1985 movie of the same title. That movie was loosely based on the first of Kikuchi Hideyuki's VAMPIRE HUNTER D books, set 10,000 years in the future. VAMPIRE HUNTER D (2000) takes its cue from the third book in the series, though there are significant deviations in plot. Here, the charismatic vampire, Meier Link, arrives in town in the middle of the night and spirits away a beautiful woman. D, the child of a human and a vampire, is hired to retrieve her. Racing against time and against another group of bounty hunters who were also contracted to perform the rescue, D fights a bizarre cast of Meier's henchmen, each of whom has his own unique and horrific way of killing. Both of the VAMPIRE HUNTER D films benefit from the participation of fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano, whose character designs for both films drip with the eroticism and decadence of a Gustav Klimt painting. Director Yoshiaki Kawajiri adds his talent at dreaming up gruesome enemies, which was also evidenced in his previous work, NINJA SCROLL.

5 of 5 Best motion picture anime I ever watched Tuesday, May 06, 2003 A Viewer from Brooklyn, New York
I first rented this anime when it came out in block buster. I was so surprised how well the video (animation) was along with the great english voice actors. I know that many hard core anime lovers does not like english dub, but this film was oringal made for english viewers or as far as I understand I could be wrong (pardon me). The plot is good, more like a drama movie then a vampire one though. The action scenes was well done, everything was very detailed. I been wanting to get the dvd for a long time, when buy.com finally dropped the price to $18.99 with free shipping I jumped on the chance. Espcially if your an anime collector which I am, and most anime people does Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A beautiful anime Friday, April 19, 2002 A Viewer from Portland, Oregon
Cinematically, Vampire Hunter D "Bloodlust" is second only to Blood: The Last Vampire, and it's plot is considerably better, especially since the viewer actually knows what is going on. In fact, in classic Japanese style, the plot has plenty of twists that make it hard to predict, especially where it centers around D and Leila. Was this review helpful?

Not only does Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust feature some of the best animation i've seen since "Blood the last vampire", but the timing and frequency of the action scenes keeps you interested enough to pay close attention to the plot. A major step up from the old Vampire hunter D. Not only great action, but some of the craziest looking anime characters i've ever seen. I definently recommend this DVD for anyone who likes anime or just looking for a crazy ass movie! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 From a seasoned anime fan. Tuesday, February 19, 2002 RPG from MA
Being, as many may not know, the second movie including "D", Vampir Hunter D: Bloodlust far surpassed the first. Based on its own merit, this movie deserves all the hype and credit it has been recieving. The animation mixed with brief spurts of CGI was simply incredible. The character development within the 105 minutes of the movie was more than I had expected. Brief powerful scenes made the characters come to life within a very small period of time. The action sequences were absolutely untouchacble and eye-popping. I highly recomend this movie to any and all people, anime-lovers and those whom may never had heard of japanese animation. Enjoy, becuase I plan to over and over and over again. Was this review helpful?

I haven't gotten this DVD yet since it doesn't come out until Feb. 12th. But I have seen this movie in the theaters & I fully recommend this DVD with no reservations! I'm an avid anime fan, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust has got to be the best anime or animated movie I've seen in a long time. Character design is by the artist who did Ninja Scroll, and his art is GOOD. The look of this movie is just stunning. The last VHD movie was a long time ago, and if you watch it now, it looks obviously dated. This new VHD movie is not only a beautiful update on the original, but it's also a brand new story. Throughout the movie I did not see a single visual aspect that was below par. It was obvious that the designers & artists were determined to create the best they could offer. Backgrounds & environments range from the lushly green to the deathly barren, but always with a great sense of atmosphere. The designs of the characters were just awesome. If you've seen Ninja Scroll you'll know that this character designer has great style & variety in his creations, I think the character design was one of the best aspects of this movie. Even the lesser elements like vehicles & mechanical designs, as well as architecture were done with extreme attention to detail & beautiful artistry. Moving on from the spectacular visuals, we also get a very solid plot & decent voice acting. This is a dub, and the voice acting is important to keep it believable. I must say the voices were all really good, I couldn't think of anything in particular that seemed bad to me. The two guys who do D & Meier Link's voices are particularly good, with Link's voice actor bestowing a noble, Victorian sound to his character. There were a few lines that came off too cliche & cheesy, but that was rare. The plot itself is very good, and doesn't go the way you'd think. It follows a less conventional route & comes to a very fresh & satisfying conclusion. There is a lot of action in this movie and it's all done with wonderful style & excitement. My favorite part of this movie other than the awesome art was the awesome action. Get this DVD! Was this review helpful?
