| | | Hollywood. From The Bottom Up. Features: DVD, Widescreen, English, French, Spanish, Subtitled Executive-produced by Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney (Ocean's 11, Ocean's 12), Unscripted is an innovative half-hour comedy series that fuses reality and fiction to chronicle the lives of three struggling young actors as they navigate the rough waters of show business. Starring Krista Allen, Bryan Greenberg and Jennifer Hall, essentially playing themselves, and co-starring screen veteran Frank Langella as Goddard Fulton, a noted actor who leads them in an acting workshop at Los Angeles' fabled Tamarind Theater, Unscripted offers a revealing look at the sometimes raucous, often disillusioning world of the fledgling actor.
 Editor's Note
Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney have enjoyed an illustrious partnership in the world of film. Their production company, "Section Eight Productions," has yielded a number of films, and Sodebergh has directed Clooney in a number of films such as OCEAN'S 11 and SOLARIS. Here, they team up once again, co-producing HBO show UNSCRIPTED, which follows the fictional lives of three actors as they attempt to succeed in the cutthroat film world. Creating a meta-TV world similar to other early 21st century shows such as CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM and FAT ACTRESS, Krista Allen (DAYS OF OUR LIVES), Bryan Greenberg (ONE TREE HILL), and Jennifer Hall (ALL MY CHILDREN) all play themselves in the show, as do most of the supporting cast. A notable exception is actor Frank Langella (LOLITA), who takes a major role as Goddard Fulton, an acting coach who leads the three main characters through some lessons in the art, with decidedly mixed results. A mixture of comedy and drama ensues, with the three aspiring actors learning some bittersweet lessons in life.

| | Professional Reviews | Entertainment Weekly "UNSCRIPTED attains a reality that just might contain the seeds of that long-awaited antidote to Reality." -- Grade: A- 10/21/2005 p.60San Francisco Chronicle 5 of 10 But Unscripted is a miss, and not because this cinema verite-styled show mixes fiction and reality in a way that is -- what's the word? -- confusing. It's not even that the series is insiderish. HBO's other series about actors in Los Angeles, Entourage, is so inside that you'll need a Daily Variety to find your way back out. The difference is that series is compelling. A faux documentary on actors who are not famous but who are struggling to be isn't inherently interesting to nonactors. But actors, yes, they love stories about their own struggles. From waitress to rejection magnet in a life filled with doubt, it all looks fabulous years later in your biography. But normal people are not as in love with actors as actors are. Regular folks are not enthralled by people reading their lines into the mirror. (Although Frank Langella is wonderful here, not playing Frank Langella.) - Tim Goodman
