The accompanying soundtrack to this vampire-meets-werewolf thriller is a cut above the usual slash-and-burn musical approach to the dark, gothic subject matter of movies such as UNDERWORLD. For a start it finds members of veteran rock bands such as Tool, Nine Inch Nails, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers joining forces (the project is produced by NIN's Danny Lohner) in an effective and often greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts musical backdrop that would be fascinating enough without its cinematic raison d'etre.
There are one-of-a-kind contributions from such luminaries as industrial rockers Skinny Puppy, Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano, California punk-metallists Finch, and David Bowie (himself no stranger to vampire movies with his appearance in THE HUNGER). Some compellingly beautiful, low-key pieces from Renholder and from Lisa Germano, whose "From a Shell" is a timely reminder of her haunting vocals and atmospheric songwriting, provide a tranquil counterpoint to the metal mayhem. UNDERWORLD is one of the most intelligently collaborative efforts of its ilk.

Producer: Danny Lohner; David Bowie; Mark Walk; Steve Evetts; Tony Visconti; Ben Moore; Joe Cardamone

5 of 5 Underworld...An Experiment in Greatness Tuesday, September 09, 2003
Travis K. from Flagstaff, AZ

Have you ever wondered exactly what you were feeling when you thought all those dark thoughts late at night when sipping coffee and staring out in the dark hoping upon hope that there was something more out there..... Well its all captured right here in this CD. I must say, Danny Lohner has done an excellent job and I feel that this soundtrack is by far one of the best collaboration projects that I have ever had the chance to listen to. So where do we start... Do we start with the The Amazing band The Damning Well, (Wes Borland, Richard Patrick, Danny Lohner and Josh *THE MAN* Freese) or maybe the apperace of Tool and A Perfect Circle front Man Maynard James Keenan on Puscifer ( The song that just makes you want to sin Rev 22:20) or should we talk about the erie sounds of Renholder...or maybe Johnette Napolitano (who has been haunting our visions of lusty vampires for years) or maybe we can track up our the most beautiful Zombie Killer in history, Milla Javovich. Want me to keep going? You can see that there is much talent on this CD. And the nice thing, is that every song, EVERY song, gives you some indication of what life would be like, living out there, in the dark. "I miss being Human" is one of my favorite Lines from The Daming Well's Song, Awakening. This is a soundtrack that I have been waiting years to hear. No frills, no crap. Just good music with heart that will take you from feeling like the predator, to feeling like you could explode at any moment, to feeling the loss of love, to feeling alive. I highly suggest any and all lovers of music (especially if you are tired of the mundane Hollywood Machine Music) go out and buy this Album. Nuff Said.
