Here, at his adventurous best, the author chronicles his eight years of being out and about with people who work in freight transportation. The prose is distinguished, as always, by its author's warm humor, keen insight, and rich sense of human character.

Annotation:
John McPhee brings his considerable journalistic talents to bear on the burly men and women who operate America's hauling machines: the tankers and tugboats and 18-wheelers. McPhee captures the language and lives of his industrial captains with rich descriptions and plenty of oil-stained appreciation.
