Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel: Andrew Ramsey, Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitar); David Onderdonk (acoustic guitar); John Giblin (electric guitar, bass guitar); Jim Weider (electric guitar); Nashville String Machine (strings); Tony Crow (piano); Chris "Hambone" Cameron (Fender Rhodes piano); Dee Dee Holt (drums); Jim Tullio, Mark Walker (percussion); Debra Winans, Duane Starling, Darcey Stewart, Jr., James Hollis, Nakeia Homer, Moiba Mustapha, Angie Winans, Tiffany Palmer, Bryan Wilson (background vocals). | | Artemis' Uncloudy Days promises an in-depth exploration of gospel music from the traditional to the contemporary, inspired by Bill Carpenter's Gospel Music Encyclopedia of the same name. That promise goes unfulfilled, as a majority of the genre's rich history remains woefully untapped -- late-'70s offerings from Walter Hawkins & the Hawkins Family ("Changed") and Andra? Crouch ("I'll Be Thinking of You") are as "steeped in history" as the collection gets. Slick, overproduced spirituals prevail, with only a blistering live rendition of "Amazing Grace" from the Blind Boys of Alabama to feed the soul, resulting in a boring and decidedly un-inspirational journey into slick late-'80s/mid-'90s soul-exaltation. ~ James Christopher Monger | Producer: Mark Nevers; Victor Caldwell; Cedric Caldwell | Engineer: Darcey Stewart, Jr.; Moiba Mustapha |
