Made up mostly of spaced-out trip-hop with vocals, the artist lineup is fairly diverse, encompassing everything from the Orb to Sub Pop indie electro group the Postal Service (whose claustrophobic "This Place Is a Prison" is completely out of place here). The very first track spoils the laid-back mood before it can even be set; Zero 7's laid-back mix of N.E.R.D.'s "Provider" resets the music to mellow but leaves the strident, aggressive rap intact. Things get a bit easier on the second track, Wax Poetic's smooth "Angels," which features the honey-sweet vocals of Norah Jones. However, the rest of the set falls victim to wild fluctuations in mood; for every chilled track like Bent's swinging "Beautiful Otherness" there is a track like Sarah Brightman's histrionic "Beautiful." There are some very nice tracks here, like Tosca's light and breezy bossa nova-inflected "Oscar," Gotan Project's weird tango-house blend on "Triptico," and Beats International's welcome blast from the past (1989), the "Guns of Brixton"-sampling groover "Invasion of the Estate Agents." Still, the point of discs like these is to set a consistent mood, in this case relaxed and laid-back, and the unevenness and flat-out wrong choices here completely ruin the mood. ~ Tim Sendra | Producer: Dr. Alex Paterson; Christoph H.
