2 of 5 Sound OK, comfort - not so much...... Wednesday, February 27, 2008 Paul from Boca Raton, FL
I was previously a dedicated Shure customer. I wish I had remained so. The UE heaphones do come packaged fairly nicely, but clearly lack the quality of Shure products in the same MSRP range. They look and feel plasticky and cheap by comparison. Perhaps this is why Ultimate Ears are on "sale" for about half their MSRP everywhere? The headphones themselves deliver passable sound as long as they are firmly lodged in the ear. The problem is that they are much less comfortable than the comparable Shures and also tend not to stay lodged requiring re-inserting every so often to keep noise isolated and sound above mere ear-bud levels. When the time comes to replace them, I will likely go back to Shure (avoiding the "e" range of course). Somewhat fortunately, somewhat unfortunately I tend to leave a very expensive set of in ear phones on an airplane every 3 to 6 months. So if you are an aircraft cleaner, keep your eyes open for a bright red set of UE's on a Delta jet soon. You too can be as disappointed as I was and I'll only suffer a moment's regret as I come back to Buy.com to find my next set of Shures! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great earphones for MP3s Monday, January 14, 2008 Kent from Chapel Hill, NC
I got these UE .fi 5 for a Zune player and it works great. It is clear and provides good volume. I also have a pair of Entymotics ER6i and these are far brighter and more efficient. It is worth the extra money for these. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Good sound, fair price Friday, November 30, 2007 Alan from Oklahoma City, OK
Comparing the Ultimate Ears 5's to Shure E3c's, since that is the sound-isolating class in which they claim to fit, they're not bad. They're certainly clear and, after trying every size of silicon and phone in-ear piece they offer, I found a pretty good seal and fit, although the Shures are more comfortable and seal better, with better outside noise reduction at lower volumes. The lower range actually has a bit more presence in the UE5's than the Shures; they have a bigger sound for the same input level. However, baseline background hiss is more pronounced in the UE5's, when it exists in the source.
One other minor issue is that the cable of the UE5's is shorter than the Shures. The UE5's appear to be ruggedly built, however, including the cable, so I wouldn't expect shorts or other failures anytime soon.
All in all, Buy.com's great price made these earphones worth the price and a definite upgrade from standard iPod earphones or other standard issue. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 So far so good... Friday, November 30, 2007 gibsonjunkie from Bloomfield, CT
I recently got into iPods and quickly upgraded the standard headphones with a couple different pairs of Sennheisers. The cheaper ones were pretty good, but the more expensive ones were disappointing. Since music is an important part of my life I decided I'd get a quality (expensive) pair of earbuds, and these were on sale. So far I'm delighted with them. They are comfortable, the noise isolation is wonderful and the sound is great. Excellent base response and the dual drivers do a great job of filling in the whole sound spectrum. I think these earbuds are terrific. The only small complaint I have is that the description said a leather travel case was included along with a metal case with cord management, but I got the newer version with neither. I guess that's a good thing that I got the newer version at a closeout price, but I was expecting them. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fantastic IEM Friday, November 30, 2007 Alex Deck from Alpharetta, GA
If you are looking for a fantastic upgrade to the stock earbuds that come with portable devices, this is the ticket. These In Ear Monitors (IEM) have superb sound and are sturdy. I love bass but clean sound more than that and these really deliver. The sound is balanced with enough bass, clear highs and high efficiency. I listen to all styles of music but mostly rock on XM. I used the Sony MDR-EX71 for a couple of years and thought I was getting what I wanted from those until I purchased the Ultimate Ears. If there is any downside it would be getting them positioned. I have a small ear canal and use the smallest tips. Once you have them positioned, just enjoy the beautiful smooth sounds. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The ultimate in-ear audio Wednesday, November 14, 2007 marc from Phoenix, AZ
Ultimate Ears simply make the best earphones (in-ear not headphones) around. I already own a pair of the custom UE5's which are fabulous but pricey. I got a pair of the super.fi 5 Pro for use at the gym and other recreational activities. The earphones are true to sound and block out most ambient noise revealing nothing but music to your ears. Crank up your iPod (or other) and the volume quickly can push past comfortable listening without any distortion. They also won't disturb your neighbor (for the commuter in you). Compact and convenient, take them on your next flight to enjoy your music or movie in silence and so that you don't mess up your lid! Finally the super.fi 5 Pro is recommended as being optimized for R&B, Rock, Country and Jazz. Don't be fooled as these have plenty of bass to squeeze your melon and make you feel like you are in your own club in your head. I chose these for more all around listening to all music types without being crippled by any extra bass. Truly marvelous err ... Ultimate! Was this review helpful?
