2 of 5 Exceptional sound, poor durability. Sunday, October 19, 2008

You cannot find better performing earphones this price range. However, this is the second pair of UE's I have owned. Suffice it to say, I have gone through 2 pairs of these because of their poor durability, and I consider myself a very careful user. The first pair I owned used a very thin headphone cord and flimsy y-junction, where they came undone. Quality materials are used in this newest version of this offering from UE. However, there still is a particular weak point- near the earbud itself, at the bend where one must create a loop to fit it over your ears. After repeated adjustments, I found that the speaker assembly severed and popped off, exposing bare wire rendering the earphones unusable. Used the headphones about a dozen times before this happened. Also, the soft leather storage case, although compact and light, contributed to the headphones' ultimate demise; you have to bend the earbuds inorder to fit them in the case!
Excellent sound quality but have a limited lifespan even when handled with care. Was this review helpful?

Have used Shure EC3, was dissapointed with the sound and fit (minimal bass, could use for live in-ear, but not for music). These fit very well, and sound great both for music (I heard vocal/instrumental parts I didn't even know were there, and I'm a picky listener) and for live sound. I have played both bass & guitar through them, as well as vocals, and they sound very natural. Ok, the cord is a little short for live, but you always have to use an extension anyway, so no big deal. VERY solid construction, and again, they sound GREAT. Oh yeah, added bonus, they totally block out the loud talker in the cube across the hall at work, even at low volume. Was this review helpful?

I purchased these Earphones to use with a 3rd Gen iPod Nano.
Being a long time audiophile wantabe I experimented with audio
compression formats AAC 256kbs and Apple Audio Lossless 800-1100kbps. While many claim their is no audible difference between formats past 192Kbps, with these earphones the quality of AAL is immediately apparent. Specifically, transient notes
are sharper and the decay is slower and more complex. Also individual instruments are separate and more identifiable. Finally, after a month with these earphones I became so certain my Paradigm Studio Reference 100s had blown a speaker or had some crossover problem that I return the speakers to the dealer
to be checked out....they came back with a clean bill of health.
Apparently super.fi 5s are just that much better that any speaker I've ever heard. Was this review helpful?
