ULTIMATE COLLECTION lives up to its title, presenting Preston's R&B/pop chart-toppers under one roof. Brimming with pop hooks and infectious grooves, "Will It Go Round In Circles" and "Nothing From Nothing" virtually define the sound of '70s pop radio, and the instrumentals "Space Race" and "Outta Space" show off Preston's famed keyboard chops, with unerringly funky clavinet and synthesizer work. Preston's composition "You Are So Beautiful," a gorgeous ballad made famous by Joe Cocker, is poignant and soulful when performed by its author, and a cover of the Beatles' "Blackbird" is a striking reinvention of the ballad. This anthology stands as the most comprehensive summary of Preston's talents as songwriter, singer, and musician. | Producer: Billy Preston; Mike Ragogna (Compilation) |
| | Artist Overview | | Keyboardist Billy Preston had the distinction of being a hit-making solo artist (scoring Billboard number ones in 1973 and '74), songwriter ("You are So Beautiful"), and one of the most celebrated sidemen of the '60s and '70s, famously collaborating with Little Richard, the Beatles, the Stones, and Eric Clapton, among others. His elegant, gospel-inflected piano and organ playing--honed by early stints with Mahalia Jackson, Ray Charles, and the Rev. James Cleveland--elevated him from mere session player to "Fifth Beatle," "Sixth Stone," and "nth" whoever else he played with. After a life-long battle with drugs, Preston died of a kidney-related ailment in 2006. |
