The songs are a mix of holiday chestnuts (Steve Holy swings "Jingle Bell Rock," the Bellamy Brothers croon their way through a stately version of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," Sawyer Brown and a vocal chorus tackle "Angels We Have Heard on High," and Jo Dee Messina does a nice version of "Winter Wonderland") and newly composed holiday numbers. These are a mixed bag of sappy ballads (Lee Greenwood's "The Greatest Christmas"), earnest pleas for holiday cheer (LeAnn Rimes' "Put a Little Holiday in Your Heart" and Selah's "Joy," which is a strange mix of country, gospel, and hi-NRG), tough bluesy tracks (Wynonna's "Let's Make a Baby King"), and cheesy novelty songs (Jeff Carson's "Santa Got Lost in Texas" and Ray Stevens' typically unfunny "King of Christmas"). It is a pretty skimpy collection and is a bit too scattered to be a very satisfying listen. ~ Tim Sendra |
