Editor's Note

Faithful to the conventions of the World War II genre, Mostow's (BREAKDOWN) submarine thriller pays earnest homage to the pluck and determination of ordinary people forced to overcome extraordinary odds. The mostly young and inexperienced crew of the S-33 is deployed on a top secret, high-priority mission to intercept a disabled German u-boat (the titular U-571) and capture the ship's encryption system--the Enigma--in order to crack the Nazi's communication codes and hasten an allied victory in the North Atlantic. Racing against a German rescue effort, the S-33 stages a daring raid on the U-571. But after capturing the U-571, the Americans find themselves its prisoner as they must pilot the leaky, disabled vessel through hostile enemy waters. McConaughey (EDTV, DAZED AND CONFUSED) leads a strong cast (Keitel - HOLY SMOKE, Paxton - A SIMPLE PLAN) in this fast-paced, tense, submarine adventure.

Plot Summary

Jonathan Mostow's (BREAKDOWN) World War II submarine thriller about a crew of inexperienced American mariners forced to pilot a disabled German U-boat through hostile waters delivers plenty of action while paying homage to such war genre greats as DAS BOOT and DESTINATION TOKYO. Matthew McConaughey (EDTV) leads the rag tag American crew as Lt. Andrew Tyler, a young officer determined to prove himself a capable leader after being denied command of his own ship. His fellow seamen include Jon Bon Jovi (MOONLIGHT AND VALENTINO), Bill Paxton (A SIMPLE PLAN) and a cross-section of American society, featuring a hot-headed Brooklyner, an earnest farm boy, a wise black cook, a pack of fresh-faced young sailors, and Harvey Keitel as a salty old sea dog. Working with a lean plot, Mostow employs Oliver Wood's (FACE/OFF) detailed, claustrophobic cinematography and an exceptional sound design to create a series of engaging and genuinely tense action sequences that take the rickety submarine to crushing depths in order to outrun German attacks. While his attention to hard historical facts may be a bit leaky, Mostow's ability to sustain suspense rewards viewers with a tight genre piece with no shortage of action or good old American patriotism.

San Francisco Examiner 7 of 10
...it is irrestible entertainment... the action is well thought out, logical and wastes no time getting down to it. Director Jonathan Mostow keeps a brisk pace and always seems to come up with the perfect shot. - G. Allen Johnson

San Francisco Chronicle 8 of 10
...if there's anything wrong with U-571 it's that it's too effective--at times, almost unbearable. If watching a two-hour submarine movie is this nerve-shattering, imagine what the real thing must have been like... Writer-director Jonathan Mostow, in an apparent labor of love, has created a film drenched with atmosphere... - Mick LaSalle

4 of 5 Among the Very Best Reference Quality DVDs! Wednesday, January 23, 2002
WarrenT from Aliso Viejo, CA

***The Movie*** Though the plot is a bit simplistic & the ending was a little anti-climactic, the movie as a whole is still very enjoyable. Set during WWII, a Nazi sub is disabled, and a covert operation is initiated to secretly board the sub & obtain the Nazi secret code delivery machine called the “Enigma”. Things don’t go as planned & we are sent off on an exciting submarine war adventure. The movie is pretty suspenseful & you’ll find yourself getting really immersed in the experience. There’s plenty of action, not just sub fights, but also gunfights and creepy moments of silent suspense as depth charges drop from above. ***The Video*** This disc is without a doubt a fully qualified reference quality home theater demo DVD. The video is very clean & free from artifacts or grain. Considering the amount of dark scenes that populate this movie, the shadow detail & contrast levels are excellently delivered. Although you don’t get any bright rainbow colors, the colors that are used come through sharply & are very well done. Mostly very earthy colors from the tan uniforms, weathered metal interiors of the subs, and the blues & dark greens of the ocean. ***The Audio*** The video on this disc is really good, a notch below being perfect. But the DTS audio of this disc IS perfect. This has got to be one of my favorite sound mixes around. The surrounds are consistently used to deliver directional effects & combine with the main channels to envelop you in a bubble of sound. Sounds come from all around, not just the obvious way over to the left or way over to the right, sounds come from above, from up high behind you, just all over. I can’t think of many other DVDs whose sound placement is so dynamic & enveloping. The sound grabs you & drops you right into the middle of the action. The bass on this movie is mind blowing! The depth charge scenes really push your sub, if your sub is turned up too high or just can’t handle the lowest bass notes, this disc will let you know. In 98% of the movies I watch my 10” Energy e:XL sub performs great, but during the depth charges my sub bottomed out a few times. The DTS version of “The Haunting” also pushed my sub to the limit. So even if you just want to see what your subwoofer is made of, both U-571 and The Haunting DTS would be great additions to your DVD collection.
