Julie Delpy's breezily hilarious feature follows French-born Marion (Delpy) and Jack (Adam Goldberg), her American boyfriend (of two years), on a two-day stop through Paris, where Marion has purchased a tiny apartment one floor up from her rowdy, eccentric parents (played with great ability by Delpy's actual parents). Just passing through after an Italian getaway, the lovebirds are unprepared for the many relationship tests soon thrown their way in the notoriously romantic city. Avoiding the metro on account of Jack's terrorism fears, the couple treks about the city by foot and cabs, getting into several vicious brawls with French cabbies, waiters, and a string of men from Marion's past. When Jack discovers how many of Marion's so called "friends" she used to be intimate with, the trip becomes overshadowed by paranoia. This suspicion would be easy to brush off if only Jack spoke the language, or if all of Marion's exes didn't insist on multiplying. Delpy, who penned, directed, and stars in the feature, has created a truly charming film. Thanks to clever writing and great chemistry, Delpy and Goldberg's onscreen relationship feels completely natural and genuine. Delpy saves her characters from being too precious by balancing their entertaining dialogue with human flaws. Though a story with this premise could easily veer off into a typical culture clash comedy, 2 DAYS IN PARIS moves past that to explore the problems of relationships at large in a lyrical way. While in the same general vein of the classic talk-heavy Richard Linklater film BEFORE SUNRISE, 2 DAYS IN PARIS has more in common with the film's somber 2004 sequel, BEFORE SUNSET (which Delpy co-wrote). That said, the film counters its thoughtful scenes with lighthearted ones, so it never becomes contrived or bogged down. Like BEFORE SUNSET, 2 DAYS BEFORE PARIS leads up to a whimsical conclusion which is beautiful in its simplicity. The film pulls off what Marion, a photographer, struggles with throughout, torn between the compulsion to capture a moment on film while desiring to be really in the moment itself.

Julie Delpy is a rare triple threat, equally talented as a writer, director, and actor. And she's bilingual, too. Such an overachiever! Her romantic comedy 2 Days in Paris is an engaging and witty escape to the City of Lights. Though it's slightly tarnished by an overreliance on Woody Allen tropes, it's still a lot of fun. And Paris always looks so good on film. At 35 years old, Marion (Delpy) and Jack (Adam Goldberg) are at that stage of their two-year relationship when they're wondering what's next. A two-week vacation in Venice has not turned out well, and before they return to New York, they stop off in Paris, Marion's hometown, so Jack can meet the parents and Marion can reconnect with her Parisian friends....read the full review |

Delpy in fact has made a smart film with an edge to it; her Jack and Marion reveal things about themselves they never thought they'd tell anybody, and we wonder why they ever went out on a second date. Much has been made of the similarities between Delpy here and Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall" but if Delpy's character found a spider as big as a Buick in the bathroom, she'd braise it and serve it up for lunch...Which is an oblique way of saying that Julie Delpy is an original, a woman who refuses to be defined or limited. Her first great roles were in Bertrand Tavernier's "Beatrice" (1987), Agnieszka Holland's "Europa Europa" (1990) and Krzysztof Kieslowski's "White" (1994); she was in Linklater's "Before Sunrise" "Waking Life" and "Before Sunset" and she dumped Bill Murray at the beginning of Jim Jarmusch's "Broken Flowers." In between, she studied film at NYU and made herself available for 30 student productions...What she has done here is avoid all temptation to recycle the usual lovers-in-Paris possibilities, and has created two original, quirky characters so obsessed with their differences that Paris is almost a distraction. The metabolism of Julie Delpy's biting romantic comedy "2 Days in Paris" runs full tilt from the opening scene, of lovers asleep on a fast train from Venice. Once they awaken, the pace accelerates even further, and you strain not to miss a word of their smart, revealing and frequently crazy repartee..."2 Days in Paris" is an inside-out version of the much-admired Richard Linklater films "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset," in which Ms. Delpy and Ethan Hawke portray a French-American pair who meet, part and reunite years later. Where Mr. Linklater's movies were weepies for the kind of educated, upscale young cosmopolites who have a soft spot for romances like "Casablanca," Ms. Delpy's examination of modern love among the almost young and still restless is bracingly hard-headed...Ms. Delpy's and Mr. Goldberg's performances are so assured and spontaneous that they don't even seem to be acting; they're living their roles in front of our eyes. As they tear each other to shreds, "2 Days in Paris" becomes a meditation on the unknowable essence of another person, even an intimate partner. Audacious as it is, the movie is also a little scary. The chances that either Marion or Jack will one day turn to the other with misty eyes and murmur, "We'll always have Paris" seem slim. - Stephen Holden
