In this unflinching chronicle of life as an addict" ("U.S. News & World Report"), Sheff spares no detail in telling the compelling, heartbreaking, and true story of addiction to drugs, his relapse, and the road to recovery. It is a harrowing portrait--but not one without hope.

Annotation:
When he was 11 years old, Nic Sheff and a friend stole a bottle of their parents' alcohol. The friend had one taste and stopped; Sheff drank until he was puking. From then on, Sheff was a committed drug and alcohol abuser, but the day he discovered crystal methamphetamines, he felt like he had found what he had "always been looking for." For years the drug took over his life: he dropped out of college twice, stole from his parents, and disappeared into the streets of San Francisco. His bracing and compelling personal memoir tells of his battles with addiction, and artfully combines contemplation with a fast-paced narrative.

My writing had been published in Newsweek. I was a great big brother. I got along with my dad and stepmom. I loved them. They were some of my best friends. So I just started smoking some pot and what harm could that do me anyway? Hell, my dad use
