He's the star of the show--but he doesn't know. Jim Carrey wowed critics and audiences alike as unwitting Truman Burbank in this marvel of a movie from director Peter Weir about a man whose life is a nonstop TV show. Truman doesn't realize that his quaint hometown is a giant studio set run by a visionary producer/director/creator (Ed Harris), that folks living and working there are Hollywood actors, that even his incessantly bubbly wife is a contract player. Gradually, Truman gets wise. And what he does about his discovery will have you laughing, crying and cheering like few film stories ever have.

Editor's Note

Comic actor Jim Carrey plays it (mostly) straight for this smart satire from director Peter Weir (DEAD POETS SOCIETY). The life of Truman Burbank (Carrey) has been broadcast around the world with tremendous success since the day he was born. A star for the mere fact that he exists, Truman has no idea that there are cameras in every corner of his world. But soon, cracks begin to show in the constructed world, and Truman questions his existence while everyone around him is in on the joke. Weir directs a fine cast, including Laura Linney as Truman's wife and Ed Harris as the show's director. Screenwriter Andrew Niccol also added interesting twists to the scripts for S1M0NE and GATTACA.

5 of 5 I was so surprised at writer's thinking. Sunday, June 08, 2003
Kim hyo jin from Daegu, Korea

I saw this movie about 4years ago, but I can't forget story of Truman Show. Hero of this movie is 'Truman' who casted by one broadcasting program before he was born. Of course he doesn't know he was casted. His wife is actress, his mother is actress, his neighborhood is actor. All of his circumstances are casted for Truman. I saw it with my girlfriend in video room. After saw this movie, I suspected my girlfriend. She looked like she act for cheat me. I also thought and suspected my family and my friend. When got out of video room, I looked at sky because it seemed that lighting would fall down.I was SO surprised at wirter's thinking. I saw lots of movie after 'Truman Show', but if someone ask me "What is your most impressed movie?", I would tell "Truman Show".

4 of 5 Not bad... Thursday, September 09, 1999
Sebastian from Los Angeles, CA
An interesting premise...what if you woke up one morning and discovered that your whole life was just a tv show of which you were the star, and that everyone you thought you knew was just a supporting actor? It's just the kind of plot that lends itself to being the backdrop for those drama/comedy movies that increasingly seem to be the transitional vehicles for stars that were previously known for goofball comedy to cross over into serious drama. (Think old-school Tom Hanks ['Dragnet', 'Bachelor Party', 'Bosom Buddies'] then he does 'Forrest Gump' and Boom! he's suddenly this 'serious' actor!)Carrey seems to be emulating this formula, and to be honest, he demonstrates that he has quite a range as an actor. Expect his next film, the Andy Kaufman bio to be similarly dramatic. An interesting film which you can just view as a popcorn-muncher, or if you prefer, one that you can think about for days to come. Not once-in-a-lifetime, but worth a viewing.

4 of 5 Pretty good... Thursday, July 01, 1999

I don't like Jim Carrey. His movies have been all the same, but this one is a little better. He actually acted in this movie. The camera angles were interesting, but distracting. The story was original.

The Truman Show is a great movie. It proves that Jim Carrey can do other things besides comedy.

5 of 5 Excellent Saturday, May 22, 1999
Emil from New York, NY
Perhaps one of the best films I've ever seen, this movie is like no other film I've encountered in that the idea behind it is incredibly genuine. Jim Carrey delivers an excellent performance.
