He's the star of the show--but he doesn't know. Jim Carrey wowed critics and audiences alike as unwitting Truman Burbank in this marvel of a movie from director Peter Weir (Witness, Dead Poets Society) about a man whose life is a nonstop TV show. Truman doesn't realize that his quaint hometown is a giant studio set run by a visionary producer/director/creator (Ed Harris), that folks living and working there are Hollywood actors, that even his incessantly bubbly wife is a contract player. Gradually, Truman gets wise. And what he does about his discovery will have you laughing, crying and cheering like few film stories ever have.

"It's unusually provocative and challenging..."  Marjorie Baumgarten, AUSTIN CHRONICLE
"The Truman Show is a marvelous movie!"  Newsweek
"This is clearly one of the decade's cleverest, most original pictures."  Ross Anthony, HOLLYWOOD REPORT CARD

Editor's Note

Comic actor Jim Carrey plays it (mostly) straight for this smart satire from director Peter Weir (DEAD POETS SOCIETY). The life of Truman Burbank (Carrey) has been broadcast around the world with tremendous success since the day he was born. A star for the mere fact that he exists, Truman has no idea that there are cameras in every corner of his world. But soon, cracks begin to show in the constructed world, and Truman questions his existence while everyone around him is in on the joke. Weir directs a fine cast, including Laura Linney as Truman's wife and Ed Harris as the show's director. Screenwriter Andrew Niccol also added interesting twists to the scripts for S1M0NE and GATTACA.

The Truman Show - DVD Review

Thankfully, The Truman Show is done right, mostly. Having been beaten down with advertising for the film, you likely know that this is the story of a man (Carrey) who slowly discovers his life is a sham, a cradle-to-grave story that’s been televised to the world for 30 years. The melodrama factor is high, both on the show and behind the scenes....read the full review

James Berardinelli's ReelViews 8 of 10
For those who bemoan Hollywood's consistent lack of originality...The Truman Show is a welcome surprise. Over the years, there have been many satires about the power of television, but none has taken this route. Director Peter Weir, whose past credits include Witness, Dead Poets Society, and Fearless, has wed this cautionary tale about media strength with a surprisingly affecting (if somewhat uneven) drama about one man's search for the meaning of life. - James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times 9 of 10
I enjoyed The Truman Show on its levels of comedy and drama; I liked Truman in the same way I liked Forrest Gump--because he was a good man, honest, and easy to sympathize with.

But the underlying ideas made the movie more than just entertainment. Like Gattaca, the previous film written by Niccol, it brings into focus the new values that technology is forcing on humanity.

Because we can engineer genetics, because we can telecast real lives--of course we must, right? But are these good things to do? The irony is, the people who will finally answer that question will be the very ones produced by the process. - Roger Ebert

4 of 5 Provocative Satire of "Reality TV" Monday, January 08, 2007
bdj from Stanwood, WA

The Truman Show boasts a great cast, director, and screenplay, but is most remarkable as a critique of the American phenomenon of "Reality TV", ironically being released before America was completely inundated with that genre of entertainment. By diving into the borderland between staged- and scripted-drama and the apparently spontaneous nature of our lives, this film digs up the guinea-pig life of the players of reality-drama and the fickle tastes of the voyeuristic audience. At the same time, the relationship between Truman and the show's creator/director (skillfully portrayed by Ed Harris) asks some profound theological questions which increasingly draw us into the drama, as we identify with this character who's trying to move beyond the safe reality he knows. What must be mentioned is the suprising depth of acting talent that Jim Carrey had been hiding behind his physical comedy antics that dominated his previous films. Carrey portrays complexity and soul-searching remarkably well. Fascinating, provocative, engaging, and--yes--funny, The Truman Show is well worth a first or second look.
