Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Personnel includes: Billy Joe Shaver, Waylon Jennings, Brother Phelps (vocals); Keith Christopher (guitar, bass); Danny Thorpe (guitar, background vocals); Eddy Shaver (guitar); Al Kooper (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Greg Morrow (drums, percussion).
Recorded at The Sanctuary, Nashville, Tennessee between February 8 and March 14, 1993. Includes liner notes by Billy Joe Shaver.
Billy Joe Shaver's first album after a six-year recording absence, 1993's TRAMP ON YOUR STREET is a rollicking return to form that finds the revered country singer/songwriter playing to his strengths, thanks in large part to the formidable guitar work of his son, Eddy. Shaver revisits his own classics, such as the raucous "Georgia on a Fast Train" and the redemptive "Old Chunk of Coal" (notably covered by Johnny Cash).
In addition to an appearance by Brother Phelps, TRAMP features Waylon Jennings, one of the finest and most well-known interpreters of Shaver's songs, on its first two tracks--the nostalgic, driving "Heart of Texas" and the moody "Oklahoma Wind"--with the old friends showing off their likeminded "outlaw" aesthetic. One of Shaver's most impressive albums, TRAMP ON YOUR STREET is essential for fans of unapologetically hard-rocking country.

Artist Overview
Billy Joe Shaver made his mark in the 1970s as a key figure in the country outlaw movement, penning poetic but unpretentious honky-tonk tunes for Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and others. His career stumbled in the 1980s, but with his guitar-playing son Eddie, he made a comeback in the 1990s under the group name Shaver. Unfortunately, Eddie passed away on New Year's Eve of 2000, leaving Billy Joe to continue his journey alone.

Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (8/19/93, p.77)
- "...he's an even more provocative songwriter now than he was 20 years ago, when Waylon Jennings cut an entire album of his material as HONKY TONK HEROES..."

Entertainment Weekly (8/20/93, p.63)
- "...veteran songwriters like Billy Joe Shaver make Texas proud. His road-weary voice conjures up images of dusty plains, beautiful losers and broken hearts..."

Entertainment Weekly (12/31/93, p.117)
- Cited by Entertainment Weekly as one of the `Best Country Albums Of 1993.'

Dirty Linen (12/94-1/95, pp.57-59)
- "...an unashamedly country record, but a much more visceral, harder rocking, and considerably less corporate effort than one expects from Nashville these days...a full bodied, mature work..."

Village Voice (3/1/94, p.5)
- Ranked #38 in the Village Voice's 1993 Pazz & Jop Critics Poll.
