Antoine Fuqua (THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, BAIT) turns up the intensity level with TRAINING DAY, a charged drama about police corruption in downtown Los Angeles. Ethan Hawke stars as Jake Hoyt, a well-intentioned young officer who thinks he's found his ticket to becoming a detective in the form of undercover officer Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington). Harris is a notorious figure in the streets and in the office. He also has the authority to make Jake's professional wishes come true, provided Jake is able to prove his worth on Alonzo's team. At first, Alonzo's blunt, carefree demeanor provides a shock to Jake's optimistic system, but as it becomes clear that Alonzo is dangerously out of control, Jake must decide whether or not to risk his future in the name of the law. Washington's performance as the evil, pragmatic detective is a sight to behold. He delivers his lines with a devilish ferocity that keeps the film bubbling throughout. Hawke slips into the role of the rookie everyman with ease, providing a good contrast to Washington's fiery presence. Former video director Fuqua completes the picture by casting musicians Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Macy Gray in supporting roles.

Denzel's performance is amazing in part because he seemingly effortlessly suspended my disbelief. During the first quarter of the movie, I wasn't sure if Denzel was a bad cop or just battle-hardened with unorthodoxed ways. His specious arguments about what it takes to be a good narcotics agent had me practically convinced. I mean, shouldn't a good narcotics agent love narcotics? My initial ambivalence about Washington helped me to identify with Hawke's character, who delivered an outstanding performance on his own as the good cop caught between his ambition and his ethics. The movie, however, flounders near the end. The penultimate scene, although brilliantly acted by Washington and Hawke, fell apart, in my opinion, because I'd been lead to believe certain things in the beginning of the film that just didn't seem to mesh with events that ocurred near the end. Although I won't give away the ending, I will say this: There is poignancy in subtlety. Hollywood would do well to learn that a whisper can be more powerful than a shout. IF you like cop movies, and if you like movies where you don't really know what is going to happen - at any time...Then this movie would be one to check out. Buy it and watch it. I saw it twice already and now I bought the DVD. It's addicting I swear!

This is a clever film. By default, you begin the movie by liking the Denzel Washington character. But oh, how things change! The most impressive aspect of this movie is it's unpredictability. The early parts of the movie seem slow because you have no idea where the plot is going. The final thirty-five minutes of the film are filled with suspense and action that justifies the early character development. Dark and entertaining with touches of funny moments. What could be better than seeing Denzel? Seeing Denzel down and dirty as he has never been before. Ethan Hawke more than holds his own with Denzel. What more can be said?
