Shelby Foote was a well-regarded novelist before he embarked on his three-volume military history of the Civil War--THE CIVIL WAR: A NARRATIVE--which took over 25 years to complete and has become a near-classic. His novel SHILOH gives the Confederate view of the battle in which one of his ancestors fought. A Southerner firmly rooted in the land and in its history, Foote wrote about his unique double perspective in THE NOVELISTS' S VIEW OF HISTORY. He became known to television viewers when he appeared as one of the commentators in Ken Burns's monumental television documentary THE CIVIL WAR.
